Severe Diarrhea

We have a year old doe with severe diarrhea. She's had it off and on for a couple months, but this weekend it's extremely runny. We backed off on her grain mix a week or so ago and got her some alfalfa/hay mix. She's not crazy about the hay so she hasn't eaten much. She will eat leaves, grass and some manna, but she doesn't act herself, (she moves slower, her head hangs lower than usual at times, tail between her legs). She will eat bread and carrots more enthusiastically than anything. What can we give her to help her? Would canned pumpkin help in this situation? We're very worried about her.

Are you able to get a stool sample to your vet and have it anaylzed? Are you giving her any probiotics in her diet? Has she lost any weight?
 
We should be able to get a stool sample.

We aren't giving her any probiotics in her diet.

She has lost a little weight but not too drastic at this point.

I would start probiotics immediately. If you don't have any, several brands are available at most feed stores or TSC's. It comes in oral paste, and in a powder that you can top dress feed with or dissolve in water, so choose what works for you.



A stool sample should tell you if it is parasitic or bacterial. We can discuss antibiotics from there, but whatever the course of treatment, probiotics are very important.
 
Thanks, Robbie. We'll pick up some probiotics on our way home from work and start her on them. We'll call the vet about dropping off a stool sample so we can proceed from there.

alfalfa can loosen stool even more.

I would try and stay with one thing don't give her carrots one day bread the next...ect...Changing her diet will loosen stool also.What protein is your feed?
 
I have had the same thing with 2 of my does one is 6 and one is 2 years old. I feed them 18% prootein feed, probiotics in feed, alfalfa, and their brows. I have wormed, used corid in water, and gave them shots of Draxin. I don't have any help from vets here. I have taken stool samples in a few times and always comes back clean.They are thinner. I can't seem to get them back on track. Any advise would be great.
 
We had 2 does this year with a similar problem, very resistant diarrhea. They didn't respond to feed based wormer or injectable dectomax. We finally knocked them down and gave 2cc Nuflor, 2cc Draxxin, 1.5cc B12, probios and pour on Ivomec. One of them cleaned up right away and the other gradually improved over about 10 days before she finally cleaned up. Hope this helps

The old saying of "A sick deer is a dead deer" remains true on our farm this year and you can't get the healthy ones sold.



Pixie is dying this morning after 2 1/2 weeks of tlc and I've done everything you can possibly do for diarrhea. Tame as can be and I couldn't fix her. She was doing better less than a week ago and this morning on her side kicking her feet dying.
 
Susan - I am so sorry. I have had my share of tragedy this year, too, and it hurts just as much each and every time. My heart goes out to you.
 
Oh Susan, so very sorry, I was hoping you had won the battle with her. We lost my wifes favorite bottle fed pied doe in june. Why ,I don't know, for it was sudden. So like Robbie I share your pain ,along with others. Keep your chin up. Allen
 
Thanks Allen & Robbie....I appreciate your condolences. This one hurt...the others were just part of raising deer. Pixie was out of Trixie (my first bottle fed..she's the doe in my avatar). Been looking forward to her for 2 years....poor little girl. I did everything I could though and thanks to everyone, I had alot of info to go on. It wasn't meant to be, I guess. I'll be ok....in a few days. I just hope that everyone else can get the diarrhea controlled. Seems to be a killer if you can't get stopped.
