If the straws are sexed for what sex you are looking for, why is the price cheaper than a reg. straw. Are they smaller ,riskier, or cant be split . May be a dumb question

thanks Ed

Henry is right on the number of does they can be used on. As far as wanting male or female, it can depend. Many people are wanting to guarantee bucks for the next year, but some what to improve their doe line. We have used both at our place. We typically start with the male. When those fawns grow out, if they have the look we want we will breed that doe back with female semen. We prefer to use bucks from our farm or partner with another farm due to the cost of sexing semen.

Sexing a buck is risky and costly. It cost a lot of money to draw semen and send it to Texas and then the semen is not good enough and your it about 2000 dollars. We were lucky to draw a buck this last fall and we got 49 male and 52 female straws. We were on pins and needles waiting for the call from sexing technologies to say we got some straws. Yes semen is cheaper cause you can only put it into one doe.
