Shedding Question

There seems to be alot of bucks in Indiana that are getting sick and it seems to be right before shedding. Has anybody put them down and pulled the velvet off. Got wondering, we lost one of our breeders over labor day weekend, and I still have one that the tips are sticking through and has us thinking we should pull it off.

The worse time for antler infections is the last month before they shed velvet. If the velvet looks black anywhere that is a sign. When you start to pull it back you will see maggots - and this can kill a buck if left untreated.

problem solved, he started shedding over night. The real question is, how long should you wait before you knock them down and strip the velvet after you start to see tips of hard horn? I understand that the non-typicals cannot shed their velvet properly but how long should you wait on a typical to strip it off?

Thats what we think also, but its ironic that all of a sudden these bucks are starting to shed and they become sick and die. There has been a half of dozen or more within the past week and half.

The shedding of velvet is not directly connected to bucks getting sick thiss time of year. This is the time of year most of the the flies and midges hatch out. It is also the time of year tall grass begins to die off and shorter greener fall grasses begin to come on. The new grass produces tender chutes that not only do the deer like, but worms feed there too, thus infecting any livestock feeding on it. It is also the time of year that the bucks go through harmonal changes that could aggrevate a compromised immune system.
