I will be looking for a few shooter elk this fall. What kind of prices should I expect? (Feel free to private message me). Thank you for any info.

I sold a 65 head. Prices I got were 1650. for spikes, 2350. for two year olds and 3500 for three year olds. They picked them up we didn't deliver.

Thank you all. I'd be looking for around 5 bulls ranging from 250ish"-330ish". Also am wanting a larger bull. 350-370".

Steve,

My estimate is two year olds at 240 to 280 and the threes were 340 to 360.

Brett,

Elk eat way more food than deer and we figure we have $500. a year into them plus don't forget the Montana tax of 30 bucks a head a year on that. But they sure don't die like whitetails. Just had a Fear Factor buck fawn break his neck in a forty acre pen for no reason I could tell. Just the deer business I guess.

Dennis,

I tried to make a post mortum collection but he had no semen. Thought it was worth a try.

With the weather in the high forties the fawns are just running around in circles playing like crazy. We just had a minus 20 degree week and I guess they are very happy about the weather change.

Later this day I found a GB High Point buck fawn who had caught his throat in the wire I would guess and he ripped the skin back from his lower lip about five inches back in a large V shape. We put him to sleep and stitched it up, them reversed and up he went. All looked good pretty sure he will be ok. Like I said thats deer farming. Haven't had any problems for quite some time and then this.

Jared,

Every pen does enter into the main alley way. The forty acre pen enters into an alley way with seven one acre pens off of it so I can seperate them on the long alley way and all these pens lead to the handling facility. I let the animals into the forty acre when I'm through with all tagging, shots and worming as it is an alfalfa field.

Jack,

I have a little Brother that lives in Big Sky Mt.

Question: What is handling large adult Elk like? Is it darts only or do you use a oversized handling facility? Do they experience many health issues?

Chad,

I use the same alley way for elk. When in the handling facility you work them from behind swing doors. They are very smart and seem to know if they go through door 1 the next door or so will get them out of people bothering them. They load in trailers very well. I have only lost one elk in thirty years while handling. I really don't lose elk and their health is just tops. They only die when we slaughter them or from old age. They are easy to breed in what is called a cow cage. Bulls if left with antlers will sometimes kill each other.

jack, will they live in north jersey ?????

Jack is right. Easy to handle and very hardy. They can live in NJ. I know several elk farms around the finger lakes in NY. The do great in Ohio.

Funny thing is I gave 10 head to a guy in Missouri to see if he could harvest them on his facility and they all died. Our guess was parisites (liver flukes ) as he had lots of standing water. Fact is I don't lose elk. I haven't lost ten elk in thirty years. Like Steve said they are very hardy and should do well anywhere. I have sold elk into Missouri before and they all lived. Go figure.
