Sick Doe-Pneumonia

We have been doctoring a sick doe for about 3 weeks now. Believe it is Pneumonia. We have gone through 5 rounds of shots now, antibiotics, banamine, & poly-serum. She was breathing hard and lethargic. Also not eating. Her breathing seems better & sometimes eating leaves, cookies & a few pellets. Seems to be getting enough to drink. She is still very lethargic though. Also has a white powder on her coat. She had some trouble giving birth but seemed fine afterward. We are new to the deer farming and just not sure what else to do or what else it might be. How long can pneumonia hang on and how many times should she be given the shots. Hate to have her suffering and don't know if we are just prolonging the inevitable.

I don't know what kind of antibiotics you are using, but if she was in my pen I would give her 1 1/2cc to 2cc of draxxin 3 times and not more than a day apart. Good luck!

Thanks Mark. We gave her Draxxin first and then vet recommended Nuflor and then he had us switch to Excede. The nuflor & excede were given in 4 days apart. We do have draxxin, so we could try that again.

How big of a dose are you giving? If not treated rapidly enough it can scar the lungs and cause more trouble in older deer

Thanks for your replies. We were giving 9cc nuflor & then switched to 3 cc of exceed. We are going to try the draxxin again. Seemed a little better yesterday. Keeping our fingers crossed.

If you can run her into a chute very early and late, you can nebulize her for about 10 minutes with pulmicort.. Steroid that opens the airways by decreasing inflammation in the lungs and allows antibiotics to work better, 1-2 weeks and it helps alot.. I know its very hot out but nebulizing works great combined with your treatment!!!
