I have a doe that is acting wierd. She has a bad case of food impaction, but she usually keeps her mouth clean. The reason i am posting this thread is because she hasn't cleaned it out in a few weeks and she is starting to loose weight.



I was wondering if there may be something stuck in there that i should get out, or if i should not worry about it?



Please let me know what you guys would do. Thanks a lot!

if you have a handling facility use it to do the deed rather than dart her, deer with this do not react well to tranq. and sometimes (often) die , because their system is weak from the chemicals being given off from the decaying food in the impaction
 
That doesn't look good Drew. I'd definitely get that cleaned out quick. Like Curtis said, run her through the barn if you have one.
 
Hey guys i appreciate the quick responses. Unfortunetly i am in the prosses of planning my building out. I was wondering if it would hurt to tranq. her light? (1cc) or in other words so that she can still hold her head up, but she doesn't know what is going in? Let me know. Thanks again guys!

If you don't have a handling facility you don't have a whole lot of options as far as darting.........but she needs attention pretty quick.......if you have to dart her........ dart her and get her cleaned out..........get some antibiotics in her as well she is obviously as you stated going down hill. Drew my opinion,is same as the rest, ASAP. then i would get rid of her.somehow without someone else,ending up with her.i have heard once they start this it never stops, right or wrong dont know, and you sure dont want to breed this in your heard DC,s thoughts only.and i would like to know why they do this ,may never know,just like the hair pulling.once i see either there gone, dead gone. somebodys freezer,good luck.
 
OK! Yea in am going to dart her asap. I ordered more darts tonight so the should be here in a few days. As soon as they come i will see that she get immediate attention. As far as the "getting rid of her" she is suposed to go for meat, but if she as little meat what good is she? idk. Guys...I appreciate all of the input here. I am new to the industry, but i am learning fast. Thanks to Russ for these forums and Blue Mountain Whitetails. They have been a huge help. Thanks again guys i appreciate it.
 
Drew,when i order darts it usually couple weeks, if you use the ones for air gun, type P,send me address i will put one in mail tommorow. if you need. i got plenty of 1and half,and 2,or 3 take your pick.little Meat better than none.never no may need you sometime.Dc
 
You should always have supplies on hand for darting - you never know when something is going to come up. It will probably be too late by the time any darts arrive. Also, if you dart her and then she dies you should not eat the meat.
 
Here is my story:

We had a buck fawn that at about 5 months old, he started to get a food impaction. It looked just like the one in your picture. over the next 4 months I would drop him(chute) and dig it out. After digging it out a least 20 times, he would pack it back up the next day. We dry lotted him for two weeks in the barn, on pellet feed only. He still impacted. I just got fed up and turned him out. Now he was coming on a year old. He impacted so bad, it busted, and food and water would fall out of the hole when he ate and drank. We let him be, and he lived that summer, even growing a 8 point rack. He would pack the hole with grass, then he could eat feed and drink water. When his plug would fall out, he would pack it back full of grass. During the winter he could not keep up and finally passed at a year and a half old. I dont know if it was a infection, or stervation that killed him. What I learned is, when they start impacting, your chances of saving them are slim.

Hey guys! Some good news, i have darts that will be here Friday morning. It is longer than i rather wait, but it is better than nothing. They are 1cc darts, but i only wanted to give her a 1/2cc so she is not totally out. I think that i will have a better chance of saving her ( she is a really small deer ). I was wondering if i could fill the other half with water? I heard of some people doing that but i never did it personally. Let me know and thanks again.
 
I have heard guys say to fill unused dart volume with distilled water to avoid introducing any bacteria to bloodstream.

I've used distilled water in the past with no problems, but the vet recommends sterile water. Either should work for you.
 
UPDATE!!



Darted her and so far everything is good. Cleaned her out and there was a stick in there jaming everything in there. I think that is what was keeping her from cleaning the feed from her cheek. So far so good!
 
that is definately what was causing it. I think she will be fine , you just need to give her alot of antibiotics. Just watch her and see if the stress of putting her down had any side effects.
 
Yea i gave her 10cc's of LA200 when she was down, and i plan to give her more as needed. She seems to be doing fine: eating leaves, grass, drinking good. I think she will do alright.
