We have a buck fawn that has raspy breathing and a coarse croupe-like cough and has had for over 6 weeks. We have treated with Draxxin, Nuflor, and Tetradure. On several treatments he will begin to be more silent in his breathing as well as less cough, then right back again. Possibly we should have been more aggressive and quicker to give more antibiotic cause now the doses don't seem to do what they used to. We possibly should have spaced the treatments closer together. They were always 1 to 2 weeks apart. We are giving Nuflor 3 times a week and after a week there is not much improvement. Any advise or ideas would be well appreciated. Thanks in advance.

sounds like the symptoms with our great pyrenees, we are taking her to the vet for a short stay so they can treat her heartworm..... they use an arsneic derivitive she may die from the cure ...but she will die if we do nothing, Does anyone know if deer can contract heartworm?

We figured that. We did wonder if you needed to switch vets (lol) Goats and deer do get lung worms, but a couple of doses of ivermectin or cydectin will generally cure the problem. Just out of curiosity....does the fawn sneeze alot? Check it for nasal botts if you haven't already. Other than that I don't have any more guesses based on your post. Get a temp on the deer if you can.

Coughing, raspy breathing and the fact that he has gotten better a few times when treated with antibiotics makes me think he has advanced pneumonia.Been using an antibiotic called excenel down here in texas for a few years now with great results.I give my 2-3mnth.old fawns 1-1 1/2ccs under the skin or in the muscle,in extreme cases or in cases were I dont have to trank to treat I would hit them every 24-48 hrs with a 1cc dose for 2-3 rnds. I have used dexamethasone in cases were deer have labored breathing due to advanced pneumonia and it has worked as a quick fix to open up lungs so they can get better air, wouldnt want to use dex too many times though as it lowers white blood cell count.Nuflor, excenel and draxxin have been my favorites for pneumonia but in a few cases were they didnt respond to that I have tried good old baytril at a dose of 5cc per 1oopnds along with twin pen with good results.Just my opinion and a few things that have worked for me.
