background...lost two fawns to same symptoms this last week. Lost weight, then scours, bloated belly, quit eating, dead next day. Twice. Treated for worms(Cydectin), coccidia(Marquis), Baytril/Nuflor....downhill slide.

Third fawn(still alive) started same way. Had a stool sample run...worms and coccicida. Hit her with cydectin and Marquis. Baytril. bad scours, pea soup green.

Checked another stool sample, still showing lots of worms and some coccicida. Changed to Safeguard oral wormer and Dectomax IM. Also Sulfamethoxazole(coccicida), and antibiotic Genamycin. And E-coli meds.

Next morning she had three stools that were firm clumps. Belly still swollen. gave her C & D anti-toxin(yesterday). Stools are soft, not runny.

Still taking bottle(red cap) and eating pellets.

Belly still swollen, firm feeling when I pick her up.

any ideas on the belly???

dtala......you been given her probiotics.....I am sure you have with all the meds she has been given .....sometimes it's good to give them a brake on the milk too....just give pedialite...and probiotics.....gives their belly a brake for a bit...as milk can be hard to digest.....just my thoughts.......

Dennis, sorry, probiotics(probios) twice a day everyday. Also some subQ fluids, esp with the latest antibiotics.

I'll get another stool sample run on Monday.

also the last fawn that died is at the University being necropsied.

My guess is a Clostrial problem . If it were my fawn I would repeat the C&D antitoxin with a large dose of Pennicillian . Post what the necrop shows .

update, fawn doing better, no scours. Belly is still swollen, not as much .

She is taking pedialite, 8oz three times a day, eating pellets, pooping soft clumped pellets.

Last genamycin dose(and 150ml fluid SQ) last night, second(last) C & D antitoxin shot this am.

no word on necrop yet..

only prob I still see is big belly...

If I were you i would have that fawn on C&D for 5 days, keep giving fluids and refrain from any milk until its belly feels better. I'm going to assume that the two you lost were to coccidia, if that is the case make sure you throughly clean any area that they inhabitited. This includes outside and the removal of fecal matter from shared areas. If stool reverts back to little formation I would follow Mr. Scott's advice with the Albon, make sure to give probiotics right after because this stuff is potent and will kill ALL bacteria in the rumen. This should be done for two-three days after feces have reshaped. If you would like to talk over the phone and you have any questions, feel free to call me at 608-669-6185. I may be in class but I will get back to you asap and help as much as i can! Ryan Rodenkirch
