Sick mature doe

2009 doe had 2 fawns 6-16-16. Good delivery, big size fawns. Yesterday was pacing the fence, ears looked droopy. This morning was bouncing into the fence, then layed back down. Had trouble walking. Went back down to pen and fed a mixture of molasses and Karo syrup in warm water...licked it up. And was walking around and ears are up regular again, but still walking is off alittle. Thought maybe she had ketosis from looking at other posts.


Any other thoughts? Worried about her and if she is able to nurse here babies

Ears are up but she just isn't herself. Milk bag looks large and her doe fawn has been crying this evening, but then saw her nurse...but not sure if she is getting any let down milk from Mom. Gave some meds and vitaminB last night. Still fed sugar mixture today. Not sure what else we can do.

On going report.....Doe still isn't herself but ears up and she is walking around pretty good. Fawns look good this morning. Fed Mom the molasses Karo mixture again this morning, but added a beer to mix to see if we can get her milk bag unclogged. Read the beer trick on one of the older posts here on the forum. Too hot last night here to run her through the chute and re medicate, will be doing that tonight hopefully. And seeing if we can milk her and get her some relief.

Update.....lost doe fawn this morning after bottle feeding a couple of times. Think buck fawn has been nursing from other does, saw him on several other does, he looks good.

I believe what Hershey Huntin Haven said...is what happen in this case....I believe we may have bruised her pretty bad in the chute.


Went ahead and put her out with BAM and Tried to milk her out last night but very little milk in any of the udders. So we were thinking bruising and not mastitis. The udders were normal color but milk bag is bluish, but continued our meds for infection and rubbed anti inflammatory cream on her bag. At this point we knew she wasn't going to be nursing anything, we just wanted to save her. Checked her this morning and she is walking a lot better. Very perky this evening and looks like the bag swelling well down a tiny bit. Appetite is still good also. Hopefully she will continue uphill from here.

Today was a good day for Momma deer. Her milk bag is going down in size and the purple color is going back "slowly" to regular color. We are thinking when she was sick last weekend, her milk stopped and maybe the combo of being in the chute and her babies bucking her milk bag gave her all the bruising. Momma deer was walking all around, eating leaves and feed and licking her buck fawn and he looks good also. Keeping our fingers crossed this story ends with a happy ending for these two. Sorry to say that Momma deer took another turn for the worse and died yesterday. LIttle buck fawn is still doing good....another mom adopted him. I was so hopeful that she had made the turn, but that was just temporary. Always second guessing yourself...if I caught this a day or two sooner....
