We are in the process of designing our first pen for a few does. We are working the ground down and gonna put in grass mixture. What is the best mixture that will take heat but grow well but the deer will eat as well. We are from central ohio.

two years ago we planted Chickory plus Whitetail inst. it grew great deer loved it. early season it was clover then early fall the chickory kicked in. Lasted two years for us on a single planting.(44 persent protien) We actually reworked and just planted Winter greens Whitetail inst. 3 weeks ago and it already started coming up ( we have watered ourselves ) Good luck, we love trying new things out here so if you do something different and it works keep us posted!

clover is fine,,,, but come first frost ??? grone . you need some thing that can take the trampling ,, forget the food ,,, you want them to eat what is in the feeder,,, i.e feed with MEDS. ECTS. plant red fescuse thats the ( onely ) thing that will take the pounding,,,, remember!!!!!!!! your not feeding !!! your just tyring to stop the mud ,,, you want them to eat the ( good stuff ) in the feeder ,, crocket

I know that some fescues can cause conseption problems if too much is eaten. The amish around me will only plant something called fawn fescue in their pastures for that reason. I'm not sure where red fescue fits in as 'Ive never used it but if your planning on a productive breeding season you might think about it.

BUCKSKIN,, WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IS ( END-O-FIGHTS ) bred in to the grass to kill chewing bugs.... trust me i tryed it all ( red fescue) and mabe orchard grass mix will give you the best results ,, been their done that tryed it . blown alot of $$$$$$$$ trust me .

crab grass....32% protein keep it mowed 6-8" tall so it will continue to stool

deer can't kill it like all other alfalfa's and clovers and the grass and weeds just eventually overrun the place anyway kind of a fatalist view but it works for me

wow 32 per cent from crab grass ???????;)

Where I'm going to build my pens there is fescue. Shud I leave it like it is or shud I broad cast something over it in early spring to put a mix to it for them to feed on?

I had thought about running a disc lightly thru it and broad casting imperial clover and alfalf in early spring. The ground has good drainage to it.

that sound just like the way I do it.... even if you work it black the grass will come back and take over..... I'm not going to say which relative it sounds like but when you choose one they give you the other one for free
