I have a 2 yr old that either started with a small cut in his velvet or his velvet is splitting, it has now gotten longer as the split appears to be progressiing to the tip. bleeding is not bad, we have supplied swat to it,

He is bottle fed and tame, any other suggestions as to what I should be doing so velvet will heal back together......Thanks

Rick, I have had similar problem before and the SWAT has worked well for me. I just try and keep it applied till it starts to heal and will help repel the flies. GOOD LUCK

Had the same situation last year-same age, same time of year, same everything. Did nothing but watch, came out a pretty nice non-typical buck who ran two main beams on the injured side and this year at age 3, he's going perfectly typical.

Rick we have had the same thing happen before. It seems like every year one of them gets into the fence. We also use SWAT and had good results. Good Luck

Superglue makes a good patch for torn velvet. Just be careful it does not run down the antler. I used it on a buck once and glued his ear to the bottom of his main beam.

Thanks everyone, the problem seems to be taking care of itself and we are also putting on swat at least once a day, this started I am assuming as a small cut in the velvet and due to growth and pressure the velvet just started to split and the split ran all the way to the end of the main beam (just in the velvet) there is no antler damage only velvet damage and appears to be healing over. Thanks for the help...

Swat is a fly repellent ointment used for wounds and sores. You will find it at your farm supply store, it's used mainly on horses.
