I'm thinking about starting a deer farm in NW Texas (Hudspeth County between Iser and Fabens - about 30-40 miles from El Paso) in the future to supplement my income as a writer. Excluding the parts of the farmette I intend to use for other purposes (house, swimming pool, orchard) I will have 5 acres for grazing.
(Hudspeth is in USDA hardiness zone 8, Sunset zone 10, AHS heat zone 9 and gets little rainfall)
- What is the maximum number of deer than I could keep on this land at any one time?
- Will I need to irrigate the land or plant any grasses?
- What breed of deer are best?
- How many deer should I start off with?
- What is the initial capital investment?
- How high maintenance are deer generally?
- How will NAIS affect deer farms?
