Swelling around anus...........?

Hi all. Hope everyone and their deer family are doing well. This may not be anything to worry about, but when it comes to my babies I always worry. I noticed today that Nina is having runny stools. I cleaned up her little bottom and noticed that under the base of her tail she has some swelling about the size of a golfball, and on both sides of her anus by her tailbone she has some obvious swelling. I am hoping it's just irritation from having runny stool but want to make sure. If it is irritation why is it at the base of her tail? If a picture will help I will do so.

I personally would give it a day or two to see if it gets worse, or better. It could be irritated from the runny stool as you said. But please keep us updated, i am not sure how i would go about treatmen, but I am sure someone else here could give some good treatment advice. Good luck, i hope she gets better
 
Thanks :) I gave her two tablets of pepto-bismol to help with the runny stool. She is eating fine but like most of us that raise deer - when something is not right, we tend to be pro-active when it comes to our babies. I rubbed the swollen area around her tail it's not hard and it doesn't seem to bother her. I will keep an eye on her and give updates.

Hmmm Gail. That is something I have never seen. I am super curious as to what advice and explanations you will get here. If she were mine, I would want someone to come out and tell me what it is and how to relieve it as it doesn't look normal to me. Best of luck!

That honestly was the first thing that popped into my head too. I was in 4-H for as many years as I could and took fat steers. When they were getting ready for butcher by fair time...those fat lumps showed up around the tail.

Now don't take that I'm suggesting that she's ready for eating!! Hopefully, it just means that she's a really healthy girl.
 
Is the lump firm, soft, hard on edges and soft in center? Is it tender to touch or (does she flinch when touched)? How quickly did it devolop? You said she was having diarrhea, but it does not look like hemorroidal tissue. What is her temperature? I would be concerned about a peri-rectal abscess. If it is an abscess then it will need to be drained. If it is palpable from inside the rectum then it has a chance of forming a rectal fistula that can be chronically infected.



Just some further thoughts from a non-deer expert, doing everything possible to learn more about deer, their behaviors and disease. Good luck.

Thank you all! She is definitely a fatty :) Which just means there's more of her to love! I just had not noticed it before, but it's not like I am always checking her bottom :) She LOVES to eat, and eat, and eat, and eat. She will run me over when I walk out with the snack bowl. She out-eats Faline for sure. Do you think I should put her on a diet? I have uploaded some pics - I'm trying to remember the order I uploaded them, LOL. The first 3 I believe are of Nina from behind. The 4th is a close up of Faline - she LOVES the outdoor fan/mister! I took the pic after she stood in front of the fan, you can see the mist on her eyelashes. If I need to put Nina on a diet I will......it will be so hard, as I love to spoil them. But, if being overweight means she could have health problems then she will start a diet.

In picture 3 - is the one in the back the one with the issue ? I just noticed her ears are down a bit, when I see the ears like this it usually means they are not feeling good, could just be how she was at the time of the photo. Usually perky ears like the one in front........
 
Actually, the one in front is Nina. The one in the back is Faline - she just got thru running laps around the pen and came in for a drink and some misting :) She is fine though.
 
I don't know Gail, but to me she just looks healthy as can be.



My doe Lucy has the same "bumps" on her butt. I call her a big heifer!



You aren't planning on breeding her so I don't think that her being a little over weight is going to harm her. I've heard in some seminars to watch the weight of your does so they don't have birthing problems.



Deer weights seem to flucuate so much, I don't know that a deer could ever get really obese.
 
Kaicreek, sorry for not responding earlier, I forgot. The bump on the base of her tail is soft, not hard. It does not seem to bother her when I touch or press on it. It may have been there a while, I don't usually look under her tail unless I think there is a problem - such as in this case. I noticed runny stool and started lifting tails! I cleaned her with a baby wipe and warm water and noticed the bumps. I lifted Faline's tail and did not find bumps on her. That is when I thought maybe it was irritation.



Susan, I am hoping you guys are right. Maybe she is just my big heifer!! It's funny that "fat rolls" are on her tail!

If you skinned that big heifer (not that I am suggesting she should be skinned) she would have a 1-2" layer of tallow. That is what you see between the tail and the poop chute. Less carbs and more leafy vegetables will cure this.
