I have a quick question for you Texas folks; what would be the best magazine to advertise in to reach Texas breeders?

If strictly targeting TX breeders, I would recommend the TRACKS magazine put out by the Texas Deer Association, as they've got a large number of members. Just my opinion.

TRACKS, as Lisa said, the DBC (Deer Breeders Co-Op) is a newer organization, but is gaining a lot of momentum and puts out a very nice magazine, and the Texas Sporting Journal, which covers all aspects of hunting are the top 3 in my opinion.

I got to tell you it really is annoying each year that goes by and Texas wants to stand off by herself.........what if each state did the same thing once they got big enough....PA probably has as many deer farmers or close to Texas and this is where i am from......and i would hate to see us isolate ourselves from the rest of the industry. We are supposed to work together not apart......I'm not trying to bring up a big fight I just don;t understand where Texas is coming from by closing its borders.....maybe someone could explain.....please don't tell me they are trying to keep cwd from entering and this is their reason......I just want is best for tis industry and Texas openingnup it's borders would be a great help!!

In Texas there is almost 3000 breeders 2919 total before this past weekend. Not sure really where your coming from by saying that we are closed off. Sure our borders are closed but we spend a whole lot of money out of our state.

2919 breeders and only 153 are a members of NADeFA thats not good. Borders being open or closed is one debate but only 153 members out of nearly 3000 I would say there needs to be a lot of work done.

I'm not taking sides here, but I do think the point that J 5 Ranch mentioned needs to be brought up again. The deer farmers from Texas have spent TONS of money buying northern semen and genetics over the years. I know several of them that have partial ownership and partnerships in farms and preserves right here in PA. Let's not make this an issue of membership stats and border issues. Again, one point is undisputed... even with closed borders there is a TON of money coming out of Texas and being invested into "Northern" deer. Just because there are closed borders doesn't mean that we can't work together to help all of us progress in this industry.

Im sorry the number of breeders i said is wrong there are already more then 3000 breeders in Texas. I agree 153 members with Nadefa isnt good but I think that number will grow over time. I think everyyear there are more and more Texas breeders flying and driving out of state to see and visit deer breeders. Yes the borders are closed but we still work around that and help other markets as well as our own. One thing that i think might be different in Texas is that deer herds are really high in numbers and there are alot hunting operations that are hunting 10,000 acres and more. Our market is really big but I think we help other markets just as much as our own.

Don H,

The Texas Trophy Hunters Magazine is a great magazine to find on a alot of peoples doorsteps these days. It is for a wide variety of things such as hunting but it is a magazine that people love to look at and look for certain products such as deer or whatever.

j5 i personally feel sorry for you guys in texas because i am from michigan and our bourders are also closed. i also believe texas spends tons of money to get northern genetics its just hard when you are in a state that wont allow any live deer to enter.

I am simply saying that if every state chose the same path as Texas has by closing their borders to whitetails......this industry would tank.........we all need to work together to build up the industry. Rough Country I agree about the Nadefa numbers........each state needs to push their members to join this organization which is the driving force for us. The membership numbers for Nadefa is pretty lame.......we need to get the numbers up if your not a member yet and you want to see this industry around for a while I suggest you become one soon!! Here are some of the memebership totals for Nadefa by state....I listed only some of the states with larger deer breeder numbers .

PA----182

Texas----153

ohio-----143

michigan----118

Indiana----107

Missouri---91

Oklahoma--66

Wisconsin---60

Minnesota---59

Illinois----48

New York---41

Alabama---33

Iowa----31

and the numbers drop basically to the single digits for the rest of the states

Not good numbers folks............need to get these numbers up! As i said before nadefa is the driving force for us!!

DD Whitetails,

I am a member of the Nadefa. I have been for the last 2 years and plan to be from here on out. I agree the Nadefa is a great organization and that organization is bringing this industry together. The members will grow i promise that just look at the track record. All Im saying is that the Texas Border is closed but we are working around that. This industry is plenty big for everybody but i believe we can improve this industry by coming and working together. I dont believe in posting negative things towards a state just because of a border closure they have been closed for awhile so leave it in the past and enjoy what this industry about raising animals.

J5 Ranch im not trying to start a fight and I believe i mentioned that in my first post. J5 let me ask a simple question......why are their borders closed......what is their reason? Like I said before, if all the states decided they want to close their borders too....what do you think would happen to the industry.......J5 Ranch I have nothing against Texas I have many friends and even family that lives there.......I just think it's not right wanting to be a part of an industry but only if you can have your own rules. I know you have no control over what your State does and like I said, I am not trying to start up an argument.....I'm actually trying to understand why Texas is doing this?

Just for clarification, I spoke with the office that handles deer breeder permits at Texas Parks and Wildlife yesterday. The nice lady informed me that there are currently 1205 facilities made up of about 1100 breeders. Some breeders (such as myself) have more than 1 facility. I have a breeding and a nursing facility. And there are a lot of deer in Texas--oops I mean a lot of BIG deer in TEXAS.

Guys I hope the day comes your borders open up for all of us......until then good luck and keep them Big Deer growing!!! 1100 breeders were catching up to you here in PA.......not sure thats a good thing as it seems the markets flooded......
