Textured Feed, Who has a good mix?

I checked on MaxRax here and they ask me 600.00 per ton and to get it other farm's around me would need to place an order as well or I would have to order more than I need. To be honest I think 600.00 a ton is to much $$$ for feed.

We use Heartland BR2 mix. Min order is 3 ton, last week was 517.00 ton delivered to Michigan from Ohio. Love it, deer are healthy and maintain good body weight year round.

I use Purina Antlermax Textured feed. It is a good feed. I do not have a MaxRax distributor in my area and the cost is 480/ton

We also use Purina Antlermax - heck it produced Ballistic so we think it is pretty good. I think we are paying about $490 a ton.

It is my observation that deer eat textured feed better for me. Thats why I buy it, but I see alot of top farmers using pellet feed only. When I tried only pelleted feed my deer ate way less. Pellets is cheaper, but I am afraid that my deer will not eat as well. What do you think?

With pellets the deer are getting all of the minerals and things that are added to the feed where with textured feed they can pick through it and leave a bunch of the good stuff to waste....I currently feed textured but am going to try and switch to pellets......I also understand that when feeding pellets it helps a lot with any bird problems you may be having as well..........just somethings to consider......once the deer get used to the pellets and acquire a taste for them, they will eat as good as they do with the textured feed. This is my opinion........

I think that is right. A couple of years ago we tried a different pelleted feed and the deer wouldn't eat it. They eat the Antlermax and we like the way the pellet holds together. We have gravity feeders made by Outback Feeders from Texas. They work well with the pellet.

I have feeders that are divided and I put textured on one side and pellets on the other. The deer eat more of the feed which is on the right side of the feeder, regardless of if it is textured or pellets. Go figure!

If you have a local mill make your pellet feed one problem we ran into was you never really no what is in the pellet. After the deer started looking poor we started testing the feed and found the the mill was using some poor quality grains and was not adding in the mineral the feed also came back with high levels of mold. We also found out from some local cattle farmers that used to buy feed there that the mill would grind up old molded feed and put it in the pelleted feeds.

So with all that said we use textured feed now so we can see what is in it.

I actually make my own feed using DDG's (Dried Distiller Grains, min 26% protein), ground ear corn, oats, calf manna pellet, sunflower seeds, and a bunch of minerals. I know exactly what goes into the feed and I know exactly the quality of it, absolutely no mold! My deer have excellent body weight with my does averaging over 180lbs and some being over 200lbs! Costs vary depending on the price of the DDG's but usually is around $275/ton.
