There is a New Sheriff in Town

We replaced "Spencer the Guard Mule" with a new Guard Donkey. We named him HeyZeus, and we call him Zeus for short. My step dad called him a Jesus Donkey or a Jerusalem donkey. I said "what is a Jesus Donkey". He then told me when Mary took Jesus back to Jerusalem on the beast of burden. It was a donkey. God blessed the pure bred donkey with a cross on his shoulders and a stripe down his back that you cannot breed out of them. All pure bred donkeys have it. On the dark donkeys you can't see the cross because they are dark. This is something that I was never taught in church but tell the story religiously now.

Here are some pictures of our newest addition. No animal will ever replace Spencer, but this Ol'Boy is actually more protective of the deer pen than Spencer. As soon as we unloaded him he went straight to the deer pen. I was a little nervous at this point. They had a brief introduction and the rest is history. My deer will actually play with him from inside the pen. I'm not kidding. Spencer was more of a pet, but this dude is serious about his deer. I waited a while before i posted pictures to see if he would work out or not. I wondered if he would take to the deer like Spencer did. He is not a pet but he's not mean either. He want let anyone near the pen but me without being between you and his deer. He has 14 acres to roam, but he want leave the outside of the acre and a half deer pen. Truly amazing animals that you don't have to teach to protect.

That is a really cool story I have never heard. He looks great, good luck with him watching you deer. I hear they are amazing guard animals!

I have a miniature donkey and he does the same thing. It is kind of fun watch him and the deer play. They will run along side of each other mirroring and mimicking the other. It is hilarious sometimes. "Donkey" will also tell me if something is wrong in or out the pens and if I have a deer that is not feeling well, he'll stand there and bray at it until I can get it treated. Very smart animals, protective, and I will never be without one.

Congrats Chad. This boy has some big shoes to fill. It sounds like he is warming up to the operation and is going to make a nice fit. Im glad to hear your home, property, and deer again have a watchful eye!

Good luck and take care.

Good stuff Split-Hoof! I never knew those animals were so protective as that. For ''Zeus'' to not allow anyone but you next to the deer pen without him being in between them and the deer is nothing short of awesome!!

Pretty cool Sheriff! :)

Gaylen,

You are right about them running and bucking together. The deer will start chasing each other full speed and the Donkey will join in wide open.

I am going to try to get it on video because it's hilarious. Afterwards they will all be panting with mouth open, and then they will all lay around and rest, not too far from each other.
