In this one year old doe I have cleaned out her cud pocket twice now, she fills it again within a day. Now she has a lump on the bottom between her jaw bones. I gave 6cc Tetradure 2cc Banimine 2cc dewormer. This did not shrink the hard knot under the jaw. I fear this will put pressure on the throat and soon create a big problem. Would Nuflor shrink this? Or should I use something else? Jeff

I don't think there is any thing you can do once they start packing it becomes a habit and they continue to do it and get infections from it . It becomes a life long battle. After while some develope a hole in their pouch and food and water go right through the hole.Sorry to be so negative but i have never herd of one recovering from this.

check for baby teeth and adult teeth this will cause the swelling in the bottom jaw and the packing is her way to help the presure and the pain.

Possible it could be an absess. If so she may recover from that if taken care of properly.Amoxicillin works for people with absesses maybe try given her treats with this mixed in and see if it clears it up.Maybe ask vet if this would be safe for deer.

The knot under the jaw could be worms? I had a buck do this this spring, and after two doses of safeguard in their feed the knots went away. I don't know what to do with packing food?

The only way I know of to help the impaction is put in a barn and feed pellets only. Clean the impaction first. Don't let her have access to any grass or hay. She will always have the problem from now on unless you pull some of the jaw teeth on that side. I would barn her until fall and then knock her out to pull the teeth.

I am glad someone finally posted this question. I didn't know what to think about this. We have one that does this as well and has for as long as I can remember but sometimes the "pocket" will be on one side for awhile then the other and sometimes both. I have actually felt inside and tried to empty it and it was just that a pocket full of hay, grass etc. Will this affect the deer if it doesn't look infected or seem to cause distress? Thanks.

Here's what I know about this. Once it starts it is hard to stop. I have grew out 1 buck, taking him from the pen to the barn, from the pen to the barn. It started when he was 1 yr old. In the spring before he was three I moved him to the barn and grew him out and shot him that fall. One doe I had, the first one to ever do this, I pulled the stuff out over and over. I finally cut her jaw open and let the stuff fall out. Well that let everything fall out. I mthen knocked her out and cut all the extra flesh away and sewed it back up. I kept her alive to pull her fawns and eventually lost her from that. Everyone says its worms getting in there that causes it. I think that is BS. I think it is almost always started by an infected tooth, like someone else said. Now I just pull their teeth and put them in the barn and feed them pellets until healed. That has worked. By the way the buck scored in the 230's when we shot him.

I have never seen a wild deer with this problem. Has anyone ever seen a wild deer with this problem? If it doesnt happen in the wild what are we doing different that causes this condition. Is it something in the feed(cracked corn) or due to feeding stemy hay?
