Treating a broken antler

Hello everyone:

I have a three year old that damaged a main beam. The end snapped off and is hanging by a piece of velvet. There is no bleeding and the cut piece is dark in color, not red with blood. I have been keeping a close eye for flys and maggots and have not seen any, however, last night he did not come out to the pasture to feed. Otherwise he seems perfectly fine, ears up, alert etc. I am just concerened that his change in behavior might be an early sign of something wrong. I planned on letting the broken piece just fall off so that I didn't have to cause more stress on the animal by darting him, especially since we are dealing with high temps right now. However, I don't want to risk infection.

With that said, I am looking for advice on treating the broken antler and administering meds to fight off any potential infections.

As always, Thank You!!

If a piece of antler is hanging it has to be removed. If flies are around, trim back any loose velvet, spray Catron IV on the wound, and pour Cylence on his back. The Catron will kill any fly eggs and maggots and help repel the flies. Cylence repels the flies but for longer.

Whenever I'm working on a buck with a broken antler I always give them tetradure. This helps with the infection and helps ward off any infection that may start before the velvet starts healing on its own. If the infection is real bad you may have to remove most or all of the antler to avoid the infection getting to the head.
