Kimbolton, Oh
To all whom has a spare 2 cents.

This is our first year breeding on the farm. AI did not go as planned why we are not sure. All 3 does are yearlings.

Please see all the info below.

Time

CIDR's inserted Oct 7 4:00 pm -16day 10 hr

CIDR's Pulled Oct 24 2:30 am -54 hr

Lap AI Oct 26 8:30 am 0 hr

Back up Buck Nov 14 3:45 pm 19day 7 hr 15 mn

Back up Bred Lilly Nov 14 4:00 pm 19day 7 hr 30 mn

Back up pushed Tink hard Dec 10 45 day

Breeding Lilly on the 14th was immediate after introducting back up.

By this we missed Tink to AI plus she was already to late on the 14th with back up buck. Should have introduced BU sooner.

Minnie I think AI caught no signs of interest as of now.

Obviously I missed Lilly and Tink by AI. Dought if I do Lap AI anymore but I am thinking my AI time on the 26st was incorrect. Just not sure which direction.

Thanks for your time,

I would have waited till 10:30-11:30 to be 56-57 hours. I A.I.ed my deer on my own for the first time this year so I am no expert for sure. I left c.i.d.r.'s in for 15 day's then pulled them and gave them there shot. Waited for 56 hours to start the last one was done at 57 1/2 hours. I did two 5 year olds 3 yearlings and two deer that are old 10 yrs+. I put a buck in with them 14 day's after. I think that both 5 year olds and two yearlings took to A.I. I think that I had 4 of the first 5 take. I did the two old doe's a week later and I know one of then did not take to A.I. so I am 1 of two at best on them.

Another thing I have seen is a dominate buck will force a breeding which does not mean the Lap AI didn't work. I have noted in my records many does that I saw breeding to the back up buck and the does delivered at the right dates from AI breeding.

As far as your AI time 54 hours is in the ball park for AI. I myself like 57 to 60 hours. Like Bill asked did you give a shot like Folligon to the does at Cidr removal?

Most people that do AI themselves and even guys that do it for a living know the yearlings bring down their AI PG average. I would guess most yearling are 33% to 50% caught on AI. Older animals do much better with AI.

All three Does are dog tame but this was a new experience for all of us.

Lilly just stood there while I pulled the CIDR then gave her a shot of PMSG that was supplied by our vet 2 days before.

The other 2 we had to put down to get the CIDR's out + PMSG + LA 300 since they were put down. We do not have an operational handling facility will have for next year.

Thanks for the questions and comments,

Jeff,

LA 300 and LA 200 Can cause abortion in pregnant does in early stages. I would think the use of this drug could cause a problem with conception. This would have been a drug I would have stayed away from while doing AI. A better drug would have been Draxxin if any was used at all. Just my opinion.

I will definitely make a note of that in the newbie handbook. Thank you for the input still learning what to use when and where.

The guy who taught me how to do my AI has always told me to never give the deer anything more than the PMSG or folligon. Anything extra can be to much for them and lower your stress. Just food for thought.

Was your pmsg mixed by the vet 2 days in advanced???? I have never seen that

Also as others have said 1st timers/ maidens usally have a much lower take rate on ai...

when you wake them up after A.I do you give them something for the pain? you know them darts hurt, AND MABE SOME B-12

The vet you hired should have administered all the meds needed,I have A/I d several first timers and believe the conception rate varies by farm. I have had many 1st timers A/I d and have several each year have twins and better. I think I would use a new vet in the future. When you spend the money, time, semen cost and using this process to enhance your succsess you should NOT be left with all these ? Jeff & Tina I wish you the best in the future! Please don't let one bad experience lessen your drive to suceed at this! It is not always like this.;)

We picked up the PMSG a couple days before we mixed it right before pulling the CIDR's,

Maybe the LA 300 was our bad when pulling the CIDR's. I was told whenever a deer is put down you should give them an antibiotic.

Lilly we did not put her down when pulling the CIDR. She just stood there let me pull the CIDR and give her the shot.

Our vet administered the after AI injections. Our girls we don't have to use a dart gun they are that tame just use a suringe to the rump.

We don't have any bad feelings about all this. We are just trying to see if different deer have different breeding schedules. Our only buck didn't have bad feelings either.:D

I have heard that first timers are harder to take AI. Next year will be better.

Again Thanks to everyone who has commented. May everyone have a safe and joyful holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Jeff and Tina- we do not LAP does, but we cervical AI our does and for 15 other farms in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Your protocol seems to be good with CIDR insertion and CIDR removal etc... We never let anyone give any shots when we remove CIDRs, even Draxxin can have adverse effects on conception. We are pharmacist by trade, and have studied the stability of Folligon and it must be mixed just prior to injecting or it is not effective. We inseminate at 57- 60 hrs and have 50% success with yearlings and over 70% success with does that have fawned before. What was the breed date of the yearlings mothers? We find it is very challenging to synchronize does in Louisiana since a herd could consist of native Louisiana does , does from Ohio, Iowa, Penn etc.....

Does your vet have a track record when it comes to LAP AI ing? Was the semen examined prior to insemination? Did you purchase semen from the farm or from a third party? Some farms as now garanuteeing conception. Did your AI tech handle the semen appropriately? If you purchased semen from a "clearing house" or auction , how many time was this semen handled prior to thawing? All these factors along with all the other valid questions asked previously must be considered in order to try and eliminate any missteps and increase your chances of conception. If you would like to talk more on this subject call me 337-322-2727

i would move to 57 to 59 hours no LA 300 and these guys are spot no that 1 1/2 year olds dont do very good there first time however i have never missed on a 1 1/2 year old that had a fawn as a fawn

Now after reading all of the reply's I have some question's. I made some mistakes as well when I did my A.I. though I do think I may have got by this time I have only seen the back up buck with one yearling and one older doe.

I gave vit A B E shot's to all of the doe's when I had them out and also did most yearlings and the older doe's at the same time. I am in IL and did the A.I. on 11/7 did two yearlings later on 11/28

My question is should yearlings be A.I. ed as early as the older doe's or would waiting a week or two be better. I was thinking about moving the older doe's up a few days next year and A.I. around the last of October 29th-30th and then do yearlings in early Nov. 5th or 6th so I could get more hunting time in Nov. Is this a bad idea?

Ideally, we feel that yearlings should be AI'd later unless they are 85% of their adult body weight. Since we have an AI service we do " out of the box" things with our breeding program. This year we moved does up to Oct 23rd and Nov 1 st on their AI date ( they usually get AI'd on Nov 15th) just to see how far we could move them up. We figured that if they do not take with the AI they would still cycle 22-28 days later and would still get live covered by Jerome Patrick on/or about Nov 15th. We will see our results in early May. We would like to have May 1st fawns here in Louisiana. July and August fawns are not acceptable because the heat and humidity. We also AI with straws of different bucks in the same doe and DNA to see which or if both bucks took.

We have never had a yearling (except our first year we had one, but we believe there were other factors) not take to AI and they are always treated the same and bred at the same time...

Hey Guys, just throwing in a comment here. We are making a deer run when we go to the Mid-West Select sale in Feb. Looking for a few more deer to haul both ways. We are currently going from Missouri to Pa and back so if you need anything hauled please call Scott White or myself to schedule your deer. 816-716-5307 thanks Troy Gann
