Last night I noticed an abscess on the midsection of one of my fawns. It was about the size of a quarter and raised. I was able to express a small amt of bloody liquid and then something popped out. It was a larva about 1/2" long and 1/8" in diameter. Transparent white in color. Right away I treated with Ivermec pour on. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think I found out what it is. A Warble Fly Larva. The pics and discriptions are exact. All the info I found indicates that the Ivermec will work.

I've had (or seen) them on rabbits, cats, puppies, wild hares and squirrels and, like PaintedMeadows said, only in the neck, either on the back or under the chin where they can't reach to remove the offending bug.

I'd keep an eye on all your animals - in my experience, you'll have a year or two with infections of the larvae (on various assorted animals), and then they'll be gone again and you won't see them for quite a while. Good to know the ivermectin will work on these creepy li'l monsters!!

Very interesting link, PaintedMeadows - the larvae are called, "Wolves," in Alabama - haven't seen any infestations of any animals here in SC (after 10+ years), though. Thanks!

I just remembered how we got them out of our kittens.

When I was young we poured peroxide in the hole and waited for them to reach their nasty little selves out to breath and grabbed them with tweezers....That was many many years ago...LOL...Hope that helps.
