I would like to say thank you for any help before hand.


My first question is does anyone here process their own deer to sell the venison to the public on site? What type of licenses would you need to do that? I've called the state and left messages, but I'm still with out a call back.


How many deer per acre on other ohio farms?


What's the best graze crops to grow in pens?


Any deer farmers local to Dayton ohio (within a few hours) interested in letting us come out for a farm tour?



Any do's and donts?


Any and all help is greatly appreciated! We are still in the planning stage, trying to make a much of a game plan as possible.
 
we are in Fort Wayne,In. you can stop by anytime. The best thing to do is first read thru this web site and you will learn about most of your questions. Selling the meat to the public here you would have to go thru the U.S.D.A. with inspections. Your state is seem to be fairly easy to get a permit for a deer farm at least 2 yrs ago when we were looking for another place because our state is not so friendly to deer farms or hunting ranches. As for the do's and Don'ts don't just build your farm off of looking at one farm but look at a few. Then ask questions and more questions on the layouts.

There is a fellow near Coby and Jerri Lee who does what you have described. His name is Kevin Marsh. I can't recall what he named his operation. I will find out.
 
Kevin does buy and butcher his own through his shop....Maddie Moos Custom Meats. But he also has and onsite USDA inspector on slaughter days.
 
We are just south of Dayton of course we are rebuilding our farm but I know a few local farms close to both of us I can put you in contact with give us a shout anytime gladly offer advice direction an put you in touch with local Farmers!
 
If you are looking at raising deer to sell venison you might also consider adding into your plans urine collection facilities. Their is additional income to be made there and it would be easier to put the facilities in if added in during your planning stage.

we are an hour from Dayton and you are welcome to come visit Coby and I any time.  We live in Indiana and recently went in partnership on a preserve in Ohio.
 
Zach, I wish you good luck. You have the right idea about visits, take advantage of the chance to visit. Visit everyone of these guys that offer. Learn from their good and bad experiences. You are welcome here if your ever in the central PA area. Eight years ago I had a dream of raising whitetails. I did it, and I have never regretted it. There are many ups and downs, and you will find that the money isn't easy to come by, but plan smart and the money will be there. I always have been a guy that happy just to make the money back that I put in to this. Eight years later, my farm debts are eliminated, thank the Lord, and I still have the same enthusiasm and passion that I had on day one of raising deer.
 
Also, I forgot to say welcome to the forums Zach. Stick around, these forums are filled with so much knowledge all in one place, these forums have been a blessing to my deer farm.
