For any of you guys who are still watering in pans, tubs, troughs, etc., (non-automated watering) does anyone have trouble with deer stomping around in the container? I get frustrated when I go clean everything out and the very next day there is 1" of mud in them. I ripped out my Ritchie tanks a long time ago so I wouldn't have to lie awake at night worrying about busted lines or floats stuck-water can be really expensive. Any advice?

I have 55 gallon barrels cut long ways. They are mounted in a treated plywood box with a hole the size of a basketball for them to drink from. I had open tubs before this and I too was frustrated of the muddy stomping. Now no problem. Also the limited exposed water helps cut down on algae growth from the sun. Just my 2 cents

We had the same issue so what we did was purchased one of those oval 75 gallon rubbermaid water tank with the bottom drain port.

Since the ground slopes past my feed building we buried 2/3 of the tank. We then trenched the drain line out of the pen about 20 ft. You see about 8" of the tub we always keep the tub filled but when a good rain comes we will scub the tub and open the drain and flush out the tank. The rain off the roof will fill it back up. With the rains here in Ohio the tank is getting cleaned and filled often.

No more problems with mud in the tub. We recently purchased one of those Nelson Waters but have yet to install it. Building a new pen thinking it will go in there.

Now that sounds like a good idea-I also have the poly barrels cut lengthways...

Thanks

I have a pen with 1yr olds, and they always put there feet in the galvanize water troughs, can't stop them at all....I guess its a habit .....when it rains it gets more muddy .Try adding cinder blocks under the troughs....it will raise it and most likely they will stop.

I have some of the rubbbermaid 125 gallon troughs and they are tall enough that they don't put their feet in but still can drink water all the way to the bottom.
