I have a problem with some of my mother raised fawns. My bottle fawns are fine, they are energetic and doing great.
Some of my mother raised fawns are very weak, stagering around and some cases can't even get up sometimes. Other times they seem to be doing ok and even trot and run around and play. This has been going on for a couple of weeks. There is NO diarrhea in any of these fawns so I have ruled out bacteria problems.
I have been questioning my feed. I use the very same feed that many top deer farmers use. However my pens are all wooded and I have no grass in my pens. This all started two weeks ago when it was 95 degrees with 100% humidity. I am not sure if the feed is too strong and making the fawns toxic? This is VERY frustrating. I am starting today to mix deer chow 50/50 with my feed mix..perhaps that will stablize any issues with the feed. I have also increased the vegitation with hay and tree limbs.
Is there a virus that causes this? I first thought white muscle disease, but I have since given all these fawns BOSE injections, and nothing has changed. This morning, another fawn seems to be starting to have the same symptoms.
All these fawns seem to have an appetite and do what they can to get up and eat, but it is only a matter of time until they can't do that anymore. They seem to be mentally sharp as well, they see me and lower their heads to hide.
Anyone have any ideas?
