Weaning mother raisied fawns

Wondering what everyone's take is on separating mother raised fawns as far as time frame. There is many topics on weaning regarding bottle fawns throughout this forum, but got to thinking that this may be a good informational topic for both experienced and novice farmers. I personally have always started the weaning process in early September (12weeks old). The first week of September we will run mothers and fawns through, worming both and giving fawns our vaccine. We send the entire pen back, no separating in hopes that this stressful situation isn't as bad if still left with mom (better vaccine response). Two weeks after we will bring them back through and begin separating as well as giving the booster shot. I have done this like I mentioned for the vaccine administration, giving the fawns some guidance to learning the chute system, and to gain moms body condition back for prior to breeding. Wondering if anyone else would like to share what they have done and whether it worked or not. Anyone left fawns with mother until cidrs? Or even through the breeding season?

We separate ours at the time when doe are CDR'd. I think copying Mother Nature as often as possible is the best option. In the wild fawns are chased off just before the doe starts her estrous cycle. Buck fawns will be bigger and stronger if left with their moms longer. Stress is very critical to their immune response as you said. Stress is bad in general for their immune systems and development of their whole body including their pedicels. On our farm I believe doe start cutting back the number of feedings their fawns get as early as about 30 days. This requires them to seek other sources of nutrition and creates an element of stress on the fawns. It has been near this time when

we have seen lumpy jaw and other issues arise in the past.

I also believe it is important to the fertility of the doe to not pull them sooner. A doe's condition can be brought back up in the 16-19 days before AI. Aureomycin can be added to feed to quickly improve body condition, weight gain, and fertility using a similar concept of flush feeds.

I have been tossing around the idea of leaving them with mom until she gets a cidr for those exact reasons. Just didn't want to risk her conception if body condition wasn't there. Thanks for the reply!

I wean 1st week of Sept according to the moon sign mother or bottle raised. We keep each group of fawns together pen by pen and up auromyocin in feed then worm and vaccinate 2 weeks later. It has worked well for us.

The quicker I get them off the mom and mom back on her normal routine and gaining her weight back on the better.

Seems to be working here we have been 100% last 2 yrs on a/I and 70% bucks and 30% does so something's working? Lol

Best of luck
