Hi,

I am wondering what the best or what has worked the best for you as far as Fawn Pastes or gels you give the fawns at birth-first few days??

I have heard a lot about these pastes but its all been from the company, not actual deer farmers.

Is there a difference beteween these? ive seen some with colostrum in it and some that have probiotics.

Its my first time with Fawns this spring and a little lost on whats best.

thanks

De worm

this is what has worked for us the last couple yrs good luck on your new adventure

Within 12-24 hours, I use 1/2cc SQ UltracBac, 1/2cc SQ fawn vitamins, and 3cc oral ecolizer, and 1/2cc SQ LA-200, iodine on the navel and iodine on the ear tagger.....rarely do I lose any after 1 week old.

For the past 7 years we've given our fawns absolutely nothing at birth unless we have an issue with size or underdevelopment. It's just my opinion, but I work in the Immunology field, and I firmly believe that the best medicine is to let mother nature work the way it was intended. Some fawns don't make it for various reasons, but I can tell you that we've had an extremely low rate of mortality in our fawns for the past 7 years.

Like anything else... it's just another opinion.

Good luck!

I will be giving two pumps of Survive D orally (rich in vitamins), and some probiotic paste orally and that's it this year, unless we get poor weather during fawning, then I will give some additional antibiotics through a syringe.

Michael,

I know you said you give the fawns absolutely nothing at birth....but do you use any iodine when tagging and on the umbilical cord to prevent future infections? I have been leaning towards this route the past few years.....each year I have been giving my fawns less and less.....sometimes I think we do more harm by giving them to many meds and it deprives them from developing their own immune system.......I am going to give this a try this year...thanks for the input.....appreciate it.....

Dennis, try some Chlorhexidine for the naval and ear tagging. The iodine sometimes does harm to the tissue and causes more problems. The Chlorhexidine will work better for you. It is more gental on the tissue and a better anti septic. I used to have alot of navel issues and now we have very very few!

We do a little Blue Kote on the ears and naval, but I think Kurt is spot on with Chlorhexidine.

Awesome....thanks guys....I will be picking up some chlorhexidine......is this something that you can order over the counter...I would think it is since you can get iodine over the counter.......

But if u were was bottle feeding versus leaving on mother would u use probiotics or not. Last yr we used shock effect fawn paste and a C&D toxin and was blessed not losing one. I hope God is very good to us this time specially since gonna have our first A.I babies to bottle feed this time.

Michael, I thought we were the only people in the deer business who didn't vaccinate. Every fawn gets 1/2 cc Bose and tagged at 1 day of age. We have never had a navel infection. Our bottle feds get C&D antitoxin at the first sign of distress and 48 hour penicillin in their bottle if they scour.
