we are gettting ready to start planting our new pens and fields we purchased 30 acres and 10 will be broken into pens and and aprox 20 into hay .What I would like to know is what to plant in the pens and fields .These fields used to be farm fields ( so no shade) and we are in north east indiana. We would like hay but how much alfalfa. I just would like the best mixutre to plant . My partners raise horses and use hay for them also so if need to plant different plots for them we can. asking for advice

thanks Ed

For your hay you would be hard pressed to find anything better than alfalfa. I plant mine alittle heavier than recomended and try to cut about every 21 days depending on the rain.Deer don't like stems so if you let the alfalfa bloom and start to harden off they won't eat it that well. For your pens I would recomend liming them pretty heavy and then planting a combo of ladino clover and forage feast chickory. Or you can buy a clover/ chickory blend like they sell at biologic or whitetail institute. I know Whitetail Institute innoculate their seed and really helps with germination of seed. It's alittle pricey though. You may be able to go to your local seed company and have them make you a mix cheaper. Rick

H & M,

We are also in Northeast Indiana. A good place to have set you up would be a place called Graber Acres Whitetails. They have helped many in this area plan their pens. They can tell you exactly what you need and how much you need. They have an amish farm store that caters to the needs of deer farms also. They are very helpful and know their stuff. I can get you in contact with them if you are interested.
