i have been bottle feeding my deer that i raise on unimilk i am thinking about buying some dairy goats or either a jersey cow so i could milk them and raise the deer on it. what do you think? or what do you use?
Goat milk is the best for the deer's digestive system, next to their own mother's milk. This has been proven time after time. You just have to be careful that the goat you acquire milk from is healthy, because they can pass along illness to your fawns. The one main disease to look out for is: Johne’s Disease (M. Paratuberculosis)
Clinical symptoms: Goats show loss of body weight, weakness and emaciation. Frequent diarrhea. The clinical disease is usually observed after 1-2 years of age in goats.
Preventive care: Consult the goat health specialist for testing of your goats. Segregate and cull the positive goat. There is no reliable test to detect J. D. in very initial stages.
We tried the red cap diet this year with two of our fawns...and it worked out GREAT for us.
1 gallon of red cap vitamin D milk from Kroger mixed with 1 cup lamb milk replacer if I recall correctly (use the milk replacer of your choice...we just used what we had available)...then we have a chart with the amounts to feed since I'm sure you're aware that you can very easily cause bloating when using formula. I think in the end, we fed no more than 10oz per fawn per feeding.
We also offer a pelleted diet after a couple weeks of bottle feeding and our adults get a pelleted diet as well.
I would use goat's milk if I could get enough of it but cant. I used red cap this year and like it a lot better than milk replacer, plan to use the same next year. I use Calf Manna pellet's for my fawn's.
