When does a doe come in heat if AI did not take?

Was just wondering what the opinion or facts were of when exactly a doe comes in heat if she didn't take to AI?

Had a huge (9lbs 11oz) doe fawn born on 6-18-09 (Thursday). Would have been day 219 from AIing.

Would a fawn be that huge if it was from the back up buck? Wouldn't it be smaller, if not a little premature?

The doe was bred at 60 hrs and about 25 minutes.

Of course, we can DNA, but just curious right now!!

My first question would have to be when did you put in the back up buck ? I'd think 219 seems a tad long but with that size of fawn I'd DNA and be somewhat betting it's from the AI. DNA will tell you for sure ! I have a chart that lists deer at 196 to 220 days and even though most would tell you the 220 is way too long there has to be exceptions within reason anyway !! Just my opinion !

We put in back up 11 days after AI. Do they come in heat as soon as you put the buck in? Or do they follow their normal cycle....28 days after?

we put our back up in after 18 days. bred @ 56 hrs had 6 doe give 18 fawns. put him in at 18 days to give him time to settle any does that a/i didn't catch vet said 10 days before 2nd cycle gives everyone chance to settle down.

i should stay plum out this, i seen them come in 28 days after, month later then couple weeks again after AI, i still got no fawns, but looking like couple weeks maybe, vet told me Cidrs can cause infection, and mess with cycling.no such thing as a hoe doe!! dc i had em cycling in september if i remember, memory fading real bad, would have to look.DC

219 days minus 28 days is 191 days.

Assuming the doe cycled 28 days after doing the A/I and was bred when she cycled, she would be at day 191 then right.?

I would say it was from the backup buck.

We had a doe that had her big set of twins on what would have been day 217. Yes the fawns were big, and it was twins, but I for now am assuming it was the backup buck. DNA will tell the story though.

I figure I can't lose though either way. The mother is out of a Buster/Mandy doe, and she was A/I bred to Big Guy who is out of a Buster/Mandy doe, and the backup buck is Updraft who is out of Big Guy. Big frame typicals with some extras!

I like what I see so far this year from Updraft:)

Thanks for the encouragement Roger.....ha....just kidding.

Of course, just hoping for the AI. The 2 does that we AIed our most expensive semen with would be this doe that had the big doe fawn and then another that we are waiting on. Sigh....of course. Looked real good at the time of AIing....no infection and good mucous.

You are lucky to have a great back up buck.....ours are nice, but nothing special...yet. Such is being a deer farmer!!

Will have to send the DNA sample and only that will tell.

Susan, I hope for you it is the A/I. But if I were to place money on it I would go with the backup. Good luck and please do let me know which way it went for you.

Will definitely update as I'm sure alot of people would like to know if it is possible....I know I read on old forums that someone (ZZ??) had a DNA'd AI fawn at 221 days. It gives me hope anyway.

My feeling is backup also and it was before I posted yesterday. But there is always that chance I guess.

I once A.I.'ed a yearling doe and she was not backed up. She gave me a very large buck fawn in the 10-11 lb. range. She gave birth to that doe around May 23rd. On Nov. 15th of that year I A.I.'ed her again and after waiting 20 days I backed her up to an experienced breeder with a couple of yearling doe that did not breed in Nov. She gave birth on June 12th to twins and I D.N.A.'ed the doe fawn and it DNA'ed to the backup buck. I always wait 20 days before introducing them to a backup or cover buck. I know a guy who will only A.I. 3 to 4 doe and never backs them up and has a nice A.I. success rate. This was not the case when he first A.I.'ed. It is nice to have a young doe that didn't breed in November in there so that the backup doe will bring her into cycle if she indeed did not work on the A.I.

The third line in last post should of been ; That doe gave birth on or around May 23rd.

What I have seen on our farm is it is pretty consistant that they cycle back in around 21 days after AI'ing this year I had three of my yearling does go 20 days after there do date from AI (196 days) still have a couple to go, but thats what I have seen over the past 12 years.
