I'm looking for a place to insure my deer at. Does anyone know of a good place and how much does it usually cost? Thanks

If you are wanting to get a blanket coverage the only way they cover them(that I found)  is a coverage of  catastrophic act of nature, only .  They will not cover darting, sickness, ehd or anything that is a natural occurance in everyday farming.  If anyone else has found something different please let us all know.

Hi Jerrilee,

Archangel Specialty is an insurance company that has developed a new product for breeders of whitetail deer, elk, and other cervid species.  Our policies cover the animal if it dies as a result of disease (pneumonia, gastrointestinal, cancer, etc.), parasite, bacterial infection, anesthesia, accidental trauma, etc., or if it is stolen.  Here is a link to an overview of the program:  http://archangelspecialty.com/programs/wildlife-breeders/  Note: we do exclude coverage for "government slaughter diseases" and malicious injury

Last week we launched this new product in the State of Wisconsin.  We will be rolling it out in Texas, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Ohio over the course of the next month.  If successful, we will expand into additional states.

We created this new product because our underwriter, while with her previous company, had received a lot of feedback from breeders such as yourself that felt that the marketplace was not offering adequate coverage for common causes of death.  After a thorough research process, we believe we have developed the right policy and pricing that will allow us to serve the deer breeding industry for years to come.  If you would like to learn about the coverage we offer, our toll free number is 1-800-575-9628.  If you ask for information on the "Wildlife Breeders" program you will be transferred to our underwriter.  I would also be more than happy to answer your questions on this forum.

Been there, Done that.  I would personally never buy another animal mortality policy.  Make sure you talk to others that have insured and have been paid for a loss even if it is not whitetail animals.  If you don't recieve good references from other livestock or animal owners that have good experiences be very careful.!

Hi Rodney,

Thank you for your post.  Your sentiment is completely understandable.  It's an unfortunate reality that some insurance companies make it a standard business practice to deny valid claims...or they structure their policy forms with so much fine print that very few perils are actually covered.  I was at the NADeFA conference in Birmingham last week and some of the stories I heard about past claims experience were unbelievable.  One farmer from Pennsylvania told me that he once lost a covered animal, and after acknowledging that the claim was valid, the insurance company tried to pay him 1/3 of the policy's stated value!  In my opinion this is a disgraceful way to operate because, as insurance professionals, PAYING CLAIMS IS OUR BUSINESS.  We're not selling feed, or fencing, or some other physical product.  We're selling a promise that says, when you lose a key business asset, we will be there to assume that financial loss.  If we don't follow through on the back-end, then we will not be in business for very long (and rightfully so).

We would very much appreciate the opportunity to share a copy of our policy forms with you and your fellow farmers.  Our cervid mortality policy is only five pages long and is worded with very plain language.  At this time, we do not cover CWD, EHD, "blue tongue", or malicious injury.  We are very clear about that in our policy.  Just about every other potential cause of death, however, is covered.  We know deer will die (because that's what all living things do) and we are prepared to incur losses.  That's ok though, because it's how we add value to our customers.  As long as we honor our commitment to the industry, and the deer farming community shows us the same good faith, there is no reason we can't have a mutually beneficial and sustainable relationship.

We hope you will give us a chance to change your mind about the value of animal mortality insurance and will gladly provide you with a free quote at anytime.

Thanks,

Chris Whiddon
