I will preface this post by saying that I am not a deer farmer, but my mother and I put a little feed out for the wild ones that come into our yard. Seeing the deer is the highlight of our day and we care very much about them.
Long story short, the end of May the following doe in these photos started coming to our house to eat and there is obviously something incredibly wrong with her. Personally I feel that it is mange but I wanted to know what the members here thought? Of course I called the Game Commission thinking about the suffering she must be going through; like how cold she must be at night, how she must be getting eaten alive by bugs and ticks and then soaked in the rain, not to mention shunned by the other deer. I sent them these exact same photos and they told me that "she was just shedding and this is completely normal". Bullshit.
A few days ago, to everyone's surprise as she didn't even have a bag like the other mothers, she showed up by the back porch with two small fawns as well. Both are perfectly healthy with no hair loss that I can see.
Anyway, aside from "What is causing her to look like this?", I would like to know what I can do to help her? Autumn is approaching very fast and I'm getting concerned she isn't going to be able to grow a coat in time for winter. I have read that you can treat both Sartopic and Demodex Mange with Ivermectin in deer, but I'm not sure what the dosing is, or if it has to be the liquid or it can be the much more palatable apple-flavored paste I give my horse? I also know it has to be given three times, once every two weeks over the course of six, to kill the mange completely at all points of its life cycle. I also read it is 1cc per 100lbs of deer, is that correct?
I think I've gone on long enough, heh. We're just very worried about this doe and her tiny fawns. She is such a friendly, sweet, trusting girl.
