Yearling Buck Ripped Velvet

We have a yearling buck who ripped one side of his velvet off. It looks like it has begun the healing process. It's basically scabbed over. The outside of the antler has all of the velvet on it. Should we just leave it be, or should we be doing something to address this?

It doesn't appear to be bothering him in any way.

Will the antler continue to grow?

Thanks in advance!!

Keep a very close eye on the wound. If you see any flies around the wound you've probably already got maggots. If this happens you will have to treat the wounded area. If not it could be fatal. If you wind up leaving it alone and see any swelling in that area it will weaken the bone where the swelling was.

Every year I have one knuckle head that breaks something off. If it is attached it has to be removed. If flies are around, trim back any loose velvet, spray Catron IV on the wound, and pour Cylence on his back. The Catron will kill any fly eggs and maggots and help repel the flies. Cylence repels the flies but for longer.

Thanks for the advice! We mix garlic in the feed to help with the flies. So far, it really seems to be working well. There is a little bit of loose velvet there that I'll have to trim tonight, but as of last night, it seemed to be drying up pretty good. Thanks again!

cobra, how much garlic do you mix in you feed rations, and where do you get large quantites of it? this is something I would really like to try this year. thanks

We mixed about 3.5 lbs per half ton. We picked it up at Sams Club.

So far it seems to be working well. We had no issues with them eating it.
