Just wondering if anybody out there would have some advice on what too do with a yearling with a broken back leg,he broke it about 8 inches above the knee, hes texas tea over a rolex doe so i'd like to try and save him. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you have a place to keep him away from all the other deer? Rest, low stress and a treatment protocal as recommended by your vet. I had a three year old shatter his back leg last year with a multiple compound fracture which broke the skin in three places. He was so bad that I almost made the decision to euthanize him. Instead, I darted him, cleaned the wounds thoroughly, treated him and then put him in one of my holding pens away from the other deer. He lived in there for three months and made a full recovery. Today you would never tell he had so badly damaged his leg. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Daniel......you mean he actually had three breaks in his back leg? you did not have to splint it? I guess it is all in where it is broken.....I had one break his leg last year....there was about 6 inches of bone sticking out and it was right at the knee joint in his back leg.....I made the decision to put him down as I do not think there is anyway he would have recovered..........I hope yours is not as bad Kings Whitetails.....

Hi Dennis: The leg was shattered with the broken bones protruding through the skin in three places. His leg just dangled and would rotate almost all the way around. I didn't splint because of the risk of infection, I didn't want to have to put him though the stress of darting every couple of days to change it. I felt the risk outweighed the benefits. Plus with it shattered like that I'm not sure a splint would have helped. Every situation is different I guess. I never expected a recovery, especially a full recovery.

Thanks alot for the input so far guys!!! I do have him in a pen with a few other deer ,but so far they left him alone, kinda limited for space right now. Its not an open wound,so thats a plus, and also talked to a few other deer farmers that had some similar breaks already, and they advised to try and keep him relaxed and stress free, and let it heal on its own,my vet advised the same thing. At first i was thinking a splint, but they said two problems with that is the location of the break, and more risk of infection, because they can't keep it clean,so i quess i'll let nature take its course, and see what happens

IF you can , get him out of the outher deer ( bucks ) as if they see a nouther buck thats week THEY WILL GANG UP ON HIM , and beat him up if not kill him , this time of year . WE ALL HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF WHAT WE ARE DOING AROUND ARE BUCKS FROM HERE ON OUT , THINK,THINK.THINK. DONT TRUST THEM BUCKS , have a plan on how to get out of your pen , and let some one know when your going into buck pens , and about when you will be back , better yet take some one with you ( with a gun ) no buck is worth being pin on the ground with a horn in your side , please be carefull guys

Ive had one break in the same place. Thanks to my neighbors weld shop we made this massive splint for it. BUT, so far every cast and splint we have put on has ended up rubbing through skin and caused more problems than we started with.

Crocket- I agree with you. I keep a bat with me this time a year. I always have something on me and I always know the quickest way out. Football from grade 2-12 and wrestling from grades 5-12 has helped my deer handling skills too haha.

keep it safe ben , hate to see a 200 lb kick your but LOL they have 4 legs u know AND WILL KICK YOUR BUTT LOL

yep pepper spray all the way...they can't attack what they can't see.....at least for a few precious seconds......

do not splint it, rubbing will cause infection at rubbed spots.

isolate him away from other deer, esp bucks,it will heal on its own

been there, done that, got three t-shirts(torn and tattered)

Thanks for the comments everybody!!!He seems to be doing fine, hes laying around alot, but hes chewing his cud,and seems alert,so i feel pretty good about him

Hello everyone

Heres an update on my yearling buck that broke his leg last october, hes walkin and running around like nothing ever happened, still amazes me every time i see him;when it happened my hopes weren't very high for him,his leg was just dangling there every time he walked, amazing what they can pull through,i didnt do anything with it,just left nature have its way

I had a similar scenario in november. Came home to find a yearling buck in the corner of a pen getting beat on by another yearling. At first he would not get up at all. Finally helped him up and walked him down the lane to the coral where he could rest without any stress.

Had my vet out to look at him, he told and showed me where his shoulder blade was shattered into multiple pieces. Not good! His leg just dangled. Vet told me to not waste time with him and just put him in the freezer.

I decided to leave him in the coral for a week and see what would happen. Every week their was an improvement. After 5 weeks he was walking on it!

As of today i can't even tell he had an injury.

Amazing animals!
