young doe just had a fawn 9/27

I had one in my Facility in Texas ...like 3 weeks ago ...very late, and from a young yearling Doe born last year. 30% get bred...but I guess it happens.I did have her with other yearling bucks.

Are there more concerns with fawns this late??? our weather is due to turn this week anywhere from 30's to 60's with rain.

They say like 30% of Doe fawns born this year end up breeding late around Jan or Feb in Texas, so thats what I think happen in your situation . I think its more that they starting thier first cycle late than weather being a cold factor. I could be wrong !!! Thats just my opinion, Marco

Fawn died last night. doe didn't take advantage of any of the shelters and it has been cold, rainy and blistery past two days...too darn late in the year and hated to pull yet another buck fawn but suppose should have;0(

We just had a fawn born on Friday to a 2 year old doe, first time momma. That means she bred somewhere around March 10th. This is her first year to be exposed, we left our buck in the pen because we were planning on moving all the doe out into a fawing pen, and so we left him there longer than usual. She either didn't breed, or didn't take, and since he was still around, she cycled back in really late. Oh well, healthy baby boy!!!

We just wonder if she will breed back if she is still nursing him, or will we have to wean him early or just plan on AI'ing her and putting her back with him, or is that too hard on her? New predicament! Any thoughts?

Hi Donna - she was a June 2007 fawn. We don't expose our yearlings, they are put in the pens the rut after they turn 1, so they fawn the summer they are turning 2. Our buck died in early December, and we put on a replacement end of December, so we knew to expect some late Aug or early Sept fawns, just because we knew some of the girls would have missed and had to cycle back. This was just way later than we thought. And, since we left the buck in with them as long as we did, there is a chance we may still have a fawn yet, there is one doe that didn't fawn, and Brad and I disagree - he thinks she is just fat, I think her belly is changing.....we'll see!
