I have posted looking for either deer or semen in the past with not much luck. But since we seem to be picking up new viewers to the forum I thought I would give this another try.

My goal is to find a melanistic doe or doe fawn and also some semen. If you can help me with this please contact me at,

[email protected]

Thanks.

As Roger said we have more viewers and I’m sure more hunters. With that said I would like to remind all viewers who hunt that if you harvest a melanistic buck we can retrieve semen from that animal. Do not allow the testicles to freeze. This semen collection process would allow the introduction of this melanistic gene into the domestic bred whitetail.

I’m one of the industry people that can do this procedure and would need the testicles within 72 hours after death. If you get a melanistic buck just email me for directions on how to handle the testicles and shipping. So keep this information as you never know what you might get when hunting.

Roger we might be able to get you some semen this way, you never know.

Rodger,

One of the highest density of melanistic deer are here in the Texas Hill Country we would see a buck come up to our house often. My my neighbor has 2400 acre ranch who had a 10 point 3 year old shot last year. Today their are two does and at least one buck on the ranch. Problem as soon as hunter sees one they shoot. My other Neighbor has several large melanistic bucks however to find them in 3000 acres may take more time. If you are interested next fall you can stay at my home in Texas and hunt for one. Apple Creek Whitetails in Wisconsin collects, processes and capable of genetic rescue of scrotum. Also Mini Tube in Mt. Horeb Wi is very good at genetic rescue.

P.S. The Salt Lick Barbecue restaurant is just miles down the road.

Roger and anyone interested in Menlanistic Deer semen,

This fall during whitetail hunting season after hunters harvest a Menlanistic buck tagging, removing scrotum and processing semen. Apple Creek Whitetails will provide post thaw results through Sperm Vision and list available straws on Whitetail Exchange.

To better help Randy and I with your desired # of straws please post name and E-mail address when available on Exchange we will notify you.

Does anyone know if this is a recessive gene and if it is, won't you have to use this semen in a menlanistic doe to produce menlanistic offspring?

Yes this will be at least a three year project if not longer as the melanistic gene is recessive. The first cross will produce a normal colored fawn which will have to be bred back to a melanistic buck. At this point you may produce your first melanistic deer. This would be the best way to go about this breeding project.

If it is a recessive gene you would need a double recessive to produce a melanistic deer. That could take a while. You would have to breed a carrier of the melanistic recessive gene to another. Assuming then that a melanistic deer is a double recessive, they will pass on one of those recessive genes to their offspring and the other parent would be passing on their dominant brown gene. That offspring if bred back to the parent with the melanistic coloring would have a 50/50 chance of producing a melanistic fawn. It would depend on which gene was passed on. You could breed back and forth for a while before you got a melanistic deer.

However, if the melanstic gene is dominant, which is the case with white deer, you would need the melanistic parent to pass on that gene to their offspring to produce a melanistic deer. Now gathering semen the way that has been discussed - you won't know if the parent is double melanistic or has one brown and one dark gene. If they were double melanistic, and melanistic was dominant, everyone of their offspring would be melanistic. BUT if they are 50/50, only half of their offspring would be melanistic.

This obviously needs more research as to whether that gene is dominant or not.

Thank you Gary and Jane for sharing your knowledge of recessive vs dominant genes and the challenge of not only harvesting the testes but how do deliver into production. I would like to share this project with others and thank you to the 4 farms that posted or e-mailed your interest. As stated before in order you will be the first to purchase on Whitetail Exchange Fall 2010. Please let us know if any one else would like to join the test.

I would think this is a recessive gene, due to the fact of how rare they are unless there is a fertillity issue.

I can’t find the genetic paper on melanistic deer that I read four or five years back. But I do remember the color was a double recessive gene. What that meant was to express the melanistic black color both parents had to either be melanistic or each parent had to have a melanistic gene which lined up to create the melanistic color.

This project will require us to use Scott’s melanistic semen which is already a double recessive as the buck expresses the black color. This first cross with our regular color deer as long as none of the female breeding does have a melanistic gene will create all brown fawns and will have one recessive gene for melanistic.

These first generation crosses when bred back to another melanistic buck will make our first melanistic deer. As I said before this will take at least three years to reach our goal of having a melanistic herd in domestically raised deer. It should be a challenge and fun to do.

Hey Scott,

you know I am interested in some semen from a melanistic buck. I would probably want atleast 4 or 5 straws. That would be a great cross with my piebalds. I could get deer with black spots...LOL

Billiejo, Would you have pictures of the deer with black, brown and white. I think we would all like to see that. Thanks
