Sometimes I wonder if that is all those long legs are good for at that age(getting tangled)....Poor little guy- Good Luck!!

Liz I`m sure in a month you`ll have the little one running laps. Nice looking cast.

Ata girl !!!

I have worked with Liz for a couple of years and I can tell you she is the "Trauma Queen"! She has seen many things most of us have not due to the wonderful work she performs for the state of CT. I think she should add her name and number to the hotline.

Liz, I would like to ask you if you have had problems with blisters and sores from casting or wrapping broken legs. We have tried several times with poor results and now have the policy of not wrapping unless bone is sticking out. We have had very good luck letting nature take care of broken legs, especially with fawns.

Hi Steve, Yes if I don't use enough padding I will get sores. I tried casting once and it rubbed such a sore spot under the cast that it got infected and the deer ended up being put down. I buy the stuff the vets use for padding and put a good amount on first, then I use "vet wrap" to wrap from the joint below the break to the joint above the break. I also change the wrap every few days to make sure it looks okay underneath. The fawns do heal really quickly when the bone is not sticking out, unfortunately this guy had a splinter poking through the skin and the break is pretty bad, my vet is going to pin it tomorrow. Hope this helps a little.

Keep it dry!!

In our experience, a broken leg is not that big of a deal. Especially bottled fed fawns.

LGode, Here is what happens when an unsuspecting doe (not their mother)throws a stomping fit. Two new borns, two broken legs. It happend so fast, my wife and I couldn't stop her. They were approx. 3hrs. old when it happend. They both seem to be doing OK. this is our first broken leg experience. You can see on the white ones head that she took a pretty good beating there also.Allen

The poor babies.. My husband made a sling out of canvas and wood with four holes in it and I was putting mine in it at every feeding for 30 minutes or so. After he had stood in it for awhile it seemed to make it easier to get him to poop! He is now walking around with the cast... It is amazing how fast they heal!! Best of luck.

Thanks Lizabeth, they seem to be doing good. Sometimes need a little help getting up. But once they get their balance they're in pretty good shape. Allen
