Watch' em Grow (Bucks 2010)

Thanks to Kyle Krammes for showing me around tonight. Lots of nice deer there. And Fear Factor is a must see. He is HUGE!!! Congrats to the crew at Four Springs Ranch that deer is for real.

Mark, I hope your 23 point yearling is doing better with his rack and continues to grow. On Tuesday we had a 74* dew-point with a temp. of 94* and it felt like 104*. I was late one hour feeding this morning. The feeder is ten feet away and he couldn't wait. He is not bottle-fed, but he acts like he is so I took a picture of him while he had his head in the bucket.

This buck you can see in the picture rubbed a little on Tuesday, but after the rain and cold-front moved through he stopped. Two years ago his older brother in a different pen was much worse and blunted off the ends of his beams and more than ten points never grew again and his antlers were hard in August when I cut them off. His beams were blunt and looked like fists and he lost six inches of growth on each. I think back what Sam James said about TimberJack and I think a larger bodied deer will handle the heavy antlers better. This buck at two years had a larger body than his older brother had when he was four and never finished growing that year.

I know a few people that run a sprinkler in a pen or have a hose with holes in it through a fence-line the deer like to lay on. This may not be something you want to do if EHD is a concern. We don't have that problem up here yet. The sprinkler does however seem to help during the hottest days. We have a reinforcing cold-front coming through here tomorrow and hopefully it will spread south. Best of luck with that yearling buck Mark.

Thanks Joe

I think he's doing better, after darting him he doesn't like to come close again just yet, but we'll just wait and see if he grows anymore, haven't seen any more damage yet but we're keeping a close eye on him. From some of the prior posts I know people have different opinions on knocking a buck down when he's still growing, we feel better safe than sorry. Even if he doesn't grow anymore, we'd rather be sure to have him around next year than wait until we see a definite problem and not be able to bring him out of it.

By the way, I don't know if we've had a day in the last two or three weeks that the heat index was below 100, some days up around 110-115. Luckily our pens have trees and plenty of shade.

Hope your buck stops that rubbing, heals up, and keeps growing. He's lookin real good so far.

Here is Grover. He is a 3yr old son of Outrageous. His mother is a granddaughter of Buster and Sundance Silver. We are thinking of drawing semen. With all the semen available now would it be worth it? Also what do you think he will score?
