Friend of mine called today with a yearling buck who knocked his anlter almost clean off. Sounds like it may have broken the skull plate. She's gonna need to knock him down to work on him. What advice would you give? The antler needs to be romoved and I'm thinking Bluekote and SWAT. What anitbiotic would you recommend? She has Draxxin, which may not be a bad choice, but is there another you think would be better for this instance? Thanks.

Use some Banamine as well.

If the skull is actually broke I know what we did once. Kinda a long story to type out on here though. If ya want to call me now Steve go ahead and I will tell ya.

My neighbor had one do this last year we cut the antler off and move the skull bone around until it went back in place, gave him some Banamine and let him be. The buck grew out normal this year and looks good.

Steve a gentlemen once told me he had a buck break the skull plate bad enough were he could see the brain inside. He said he packed it full of Balsa Balm(I think). It took two years but he finally grew his normal rack again. His farm was located in Lebanon Missouri. I think his phone number was (417) 532-6994. That looks like its going to need more than a shot. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Roger, thanks for taking the time to talk to me on the phone. We'll try to position the antler back in place the way you described. It just may be crazy enough to work :)

Good luck to her and let me know how it works out. Just use the masking tape as too strong of tape won't fall off on its own the way you will want it to.

We had a yearling hit the fence a month or so back and had same thing happen. We cut the broken side (one person cutting while another tried to minimize skull moving). I put a cattle insecticide tag in ear next to broke antler. I gave banamine, exceed, and baytril. We then sprayed the deer down with permethrin to minimize flies, sprayed cut antler with alushield. Also before we cut the antler I put a zip tie as close to base as possible and pulled it as tight as I could. I kept a close eye on him for two days then knocked him down again to give more antibiotics and banamine. That was all we did. This is him about a month after it happened.

Is the eye all bashed up from the antler hitting it repeatedly?

Ouch...hope the big guy recovers okay!

They think the blood on the eye came from the internal pressure of the skull plate moving around and putting pressure above the eye area. They set the antlers and doctored him up. He's back on his feet and was eating out of their hand with in 30 minutes. Poor guy's been through a lot. Not sure what the end result will be yet. I'll post some pics of what the finished project looks like tomorrow when she sends them. Thanks for everyone's help.

Yeah, definitely good signs...lets hope he makes a full recovery and he ends up with a beautiful rack next year!

Just had the same thing happen to my yearling. Called the Vet, the antler was broken off right at the scull and just hanging. After ten days the Antler fell off and he is growing a little stump. He would have had some nice antlers and I hope that next year he will be ok. The picture could have been my yearling. Guess we were lucky that flies did not go in and infection set in. My Vet advised me to just let nature take care of it, he said that the antler would fall off by itself. If not, he would have come and cut it off. Its funny to see my yearling with one sided antler.
