Hi Steve, Yes if I don't use enough padding I will get sores. I tried casting once and it rubbed such a sore spot under the cast that it got infected and the deer ended up being put down. I buy the stuff the vets use for padding and put a good amount on first, then I use "vet wrap" to wrap from the joint below the break to the joint above the break. I also change the wrap every few days to make sure it looks okay underneath. The fawns do heal really quickly when the bone is not sticking out, unfortunately this guy had a splinter poking through the skin and the break is pretty bad, my vet is going to pin it tomorrow. Hope this helps a little.
