Im down at a friends place near San Antonio. He is currently feeding MaxRax. We just got done with AI last night. As deer were jumping in the handler I snapped a picture of one of the deer so you guys could get an idea of what I am talking about. Of the 200 deer he has in breeding pens I would say 15% of them have hair loss similar to this deer in the chute. Most of them are not as bad though. He said they looked great prior to using pour on wormer, after that he said there fur started falling out like this and looking really beat up. To me it looks like a vitamin difficiency or something to that extent. He worms regularly, I am just trying to help him out. I will certainly welcome any and all comments or suggestions any of you may have. Could this have been caused by the wonderfly cool weather everyone in TX experienced this summer?

Thanks,

Johnny B

ps. sorry I dont have more pictures, I can take some if you guys want more out in a pen for example.

Looks to me like it's been pulled out by other deer. I've got one that does it at this time of year when there isn't as much to nibble on. I could see that being a problem in Texas right now. I personally think they get bored and need something different to munch on. Wade

I know what your talking about there Wade, and before I saw the pic I was thinking the same, but I've never seen them pull it out of each others back. At least I think we're looking at the deer's back. Anything is possible I guess!

I would think that if they were fine before the pour on wormer, then it must be a reaction to the wormer.

For us, it's normally on the rump. There is less payback at that end and it's easier to get to. If it's just on the rump and not all over, I'll stick with it being another deer. To me, the pattern makes me believe it was pulled out in chunks. If it's everywhere, I have no idea.

My vote is it was caused by the pour on wormer! If it comes back in white or scabs up and makes a sore you will know for sure!

I have had similar experiences with Pour on. Only Ivermec brand. Also it was more noticeable in the animals that I ran the wormer from the rear to the front and really got it on there skin.

Thanks for the responses. I will take a few pictures tomorrow. It is all over there bodies. They are fed hay and alfalfa along with there MaxRax. Otherwise they look healthy. What about fat content in the feed. I know people in TX dont like putting fat in there deer feed. These deer are only on 3-4% fat in there feed. That seems low to me. What do you guys think about that?

I don;t use either max rax or topical application of pour on wormer and have similar hair issues. It seems to be most prevailent on my northerns. It has been this way in my pens for years without any adverse effects.

It would not be the feed. I will stick with Wade on this one. Besides Waynes wife said he is never right. I don't know why you would use pour on when you run them through the chute. Ivomec plus would be better. I use pour on to worm them on their feed.

I use Eprinex pour on with the change in the seasons. All our deer are tame and allow me to put this on at will. Know i do not pour it neck to tail. I put it right between the front shoulder blades directly on the skin in about a 3 inch line. Just far enough forward to where there mouths cant reach.

Not sure what you all got there exactly. But we apply the dewarmer in this manner to keep them from licking it or pulling there own, or each others hair out.

We do use ivomec plus everytime we handle the animals in a shoot or put down.

I've seen deer pull each others hair out before...witnessed it...and the deer that got the hair pulled out never flinched or moved. The hair pull that I witnessed was not an act of aggression either, she just did it. I've seen hair pulled out on the sides of the rib cage, flanks, and generally along their sides, but have never seen them pull hair out of the TOP of their back. If it's deer pulling hair, it will be in noticable patches, from small to large, but not an even keel all over the body as it appears it is in the picture. This is my opinion from what I have SEEN!
