Im new to raising deer. Ive just got one buck and getting a few does after the first. This ehd has me worried. Are these rope wicks part of the answer. Makes sense to have the deer walk under them to get to the water. It sounds like I should spray aswell. Do I spray daily? With the rope wicks, do you have to let the deer get use to walking under the pvc before adding wicks? Is it safe to use with bucks? And I dont have to worry to much till spring right? Thnx for any advice.

EHD is a mid/late summer to Oct disease, dependant on no-see-em gnats for transmission. Do a search on misting, spraying, wicks. Some say they work..sometimes, others say they don't work...mostly.

After I started having deer get EHD this summer I built two of them and placed them where the deer had to go through them to get to water and feed. I placed the rope's 6" apart, if I had it to build over I would space them no moer than 4" and may double the rope's on the two I have to place them at 3" spacing. In no way is the rope wick a complete fix to prevent EHD, I still had deer get sick and I still lost deer. My buck's went under them with no problem's at all.

spray spray spray spray. Thats about all I can say. The rope wicks will help but spray a lot mostly at sun up, sun down, and once it gets dark. and yes its a warm weather thing, and dry years like this past year are worse. there is no real cure for EHD, just a lot of preventatives that can be taken.

Can anyone give some simple directions for making one of these? I know last summer there were a few suggestions but I would like to see some pictures with step by step instructions if anyone has made one of these.

John,

I think that would be nice if we could get a little thread/ how to going from those with the knowledge an experience making them!!!

I know a guy that makes them in NE Alabama. I am going to talk with him this weekend at some point, when I do I will ask if he has some stockpiled. I think he charges $80 give or take to make them. He only uses his rope wicks, no spraying at all. I have never seen a fly on one of his deer any time I have been there when its warm. He has them in with his bucks until they are just about ready to shed velvet, he has not ever had an issue with them getting there antlers stuck. Not saying it isn't possible. He also uses more rope on each rope wick than most people do. I would give you his number to call him but, unfortunately his wife is quite ill right now. I do know, if you can keep those ding dang flies off of your deer they are significantly happier throughout the warm months.

I dont have any photo's but they are simple to make. I used 4" pvc. I used a smaller 1/4 inch rope on the second one I built and it worked better for me than larger rope I used on the first. Chalk a line down the pipe, drill hole's every 6 inch's about an inch and a half from your line, then do the same thing on the other side of the line and offset the hole's so your rope will be 3" apart when you are done. Cap one end then I put a T on the other with a screw cap on top so it is easy to fill.

Real simple we used 4 inch PVC 4 ft long with a cap on one end and a 90 or 45 elbow with a threaded cap on the other a drill PVC glue and a roll of rope from tractor supply drill a hole the size of rope push rope all the way to the end and tie a knot then pull rope back the knot will keep from pulling back through do this over till u get the pipe filled at perfered spacing be sure to do this before glueing ur caps on make sure to push the ropes back up in the pipe so it can absorb ur chemical should have no more than $40 in each one and about 10 mins

Well im definitely spraying as well as building one of these. Is it just plain rope or a special wick rope? I read use diesel with a insectiside?

We used just regular rope. We are also buying 41 percent perimeterin at a local feed store in gallon jugs for about $40 mixing about 10 ounces with 5 gallon diesel. Can fill about 5 tubes that last about 2 weeks. Since we started using these two yrs ago we don't see very few flies or ticks on the deer. I'm a firm believer in this system weather u buy them or make them. If u gonna buy them the guy that builds them here in Ne Alabama I would give him a shot he's a great guy. We try to use them going into water troughs and also try to set up close to our feeders seems to help on bugs around them too
