It looks like you angled all your corners in the pens and personally I like that. I would definitely add a gate that goes between each pen..........GATES are the BEST friend you will have when it comes to handeling your deer out in the pen.

Yeah this is just the rough draft..... I'm thinking alleys between pens and also gates.... I think I can make an honest start with this!

If you have the room on the other side of alley I would put a couple of pens there, reason being is you are able to alternate breeding pens. That way you dont have breeder bucks side by side or next to does. The bucks always find a way to fight. I try to have fawns in between my breeders and yearlings and 2 yr old next to buck fawns away from any does. This seems to help a bunch with the fighting. And like Wayne said put gates in between the pens when you build them you will be very thankful you did it first before you wished you did.

Memory Lane.. If you can swing it I would trench in at least electric line to each pen with a outlet boxs in each pen for water tank heaters try and layout to go between posts. Put boxs up high so they don't lick or chew on them, I didn't do this now I have to go back and do and hopefully don't freak everybody out when I do it. It's a lot better to do noisy things before you get all your pens full!!! Good Luck! Layout looks good! Alley ways 12 foot wide? Charlie.

Yes alleys are twelve foot wide cut that off in pictures also considering the waters that the line is buried an allows fresh water without freezing issues....

Personally, I'd at least double the width of the lane (slows them a bit),& have as many bends or dog legs in it as you can. Deer will move around a corner to get away from you without them breaking back or balking.

Can you put a milling/outside yard before the shed which they turn into & slow/calm down & also do the initial breaking down/sorting before you run them inside. Maybe use some of that space in pen one for this.

Use as many bends or turns as you can,to get them to go where you want.

Cheers Sharkey

I had a little time this morning, so I put together a sketch for one possibility of a layout for you. it is just one opinion, so take what you can get from it. By closing some gates and using the quilotion gates, you can run animals into a temperary holding pen behind the barn or back thru the runways and back into the barn. Again, just one mans opinion. I hope this helps.

Not sure if the attachment is going to show up. If not, will try again.

I had a little time this morning, so I put together a simple layout for you. This is just my opinion, so please just take whatever you can get from it. By closing the entering and leaving gates, you can use the quilotine gates to move deer into a small holding pen behind the barn or run them back thru the alleyway to get them back into the barn. Again, just a starting point for you to look at. I hope this is helpful.

I also forgot to mention, that I didn't like the small end of pen #4. If people stop their cars on the driveway and get out to look at the animals and they run into a small corner, like that shown in Pen #4, you could get some animals hurt. Therefore, I would angle the pen divider walls so that they are all equal on the side by the alleyway. Sorry for all the posts.

Thank you for taking the time also the driveway will be gated about 100yrds from the pens with mature trees blocking views of pens. But like your ideas as well on the barn. That's my plan I hadn't got there yet but want a holding pen on both sides of barn to bring them in an separate and then let them out. This is still in the baby stages for sure. We are building a pen now just behind the house to start out and test the waters

Our setup is similar to yours. our house is 1000ft off the road and some of our pens are between the house and road and run along the drive. Something as bad if not worse than people getting out in your driveway to look at the deer is the UPS truck barreling down the drive. I had to put a drop box for delivery trucks close to the end of the drive by the road. The propane truck doesn't make them bounce off the fence but they don't really like it either.

I just started building and i was planning building a large pen(300x300) in between the gravel road and my house, with the driveway on the side. But now that you mentioned the UPS truck that flys down the drive at least once a week im rethinking. With this pen being 300 ft wide will this help? I dont want to put the deer in a stressful place that i could avoid with better planning.

I like this thread, I enjoy seeing what other are thinking. At first i thought less doglegs or turns in alleys was the way to go but i guess it makes sense to slow momentom.

Might try to upload my plan to get some tips too. thnx

Just a quick tip. If you can incorporate hills or a ravine into you layout it also gives the deer somewhere "safe" to go to. If you can not see the back of the pen from the front due to a change in the topography it will give your deer a sense of safety.

Make sure you can get a small tractor/skid steer into all your pens. You will need to get in there eventually.

A loading/unloading area as well.

Another rough draft this time a lil more details like alleys what ya all think?
