Anybody using these to help keep biting insects off of your deer?

What pesticides are you using in yours?

Will these work in your mature buck pens?

Thanks....Bill

I use mineral oil mixed with an oil based permethrin insect repellent made for cattle. First hung pipe and rope wicks beside gate for a couple days. Next I put it over gateway up high for a day. Then I dropped it down halfway and finally all the way. Once they got used to walking through the wicks dry I added the repellent mineral oil mix. It is important to get an OIL based repellent. It mixes well and stays on their hair and antlers longer. My mature bucks had no problems going through wicks.

Good luck

We built some not too long ago and i highly recommend it.  I was probably a little bit excessive but everything I do is overkill we ran 7/16" rope through a 3" PVC pipe every 2" along the top and let 18"-24" rope hanging down.  We just made a eye loop at the end of the rope with a small piece of wire and a hook with the other end and it was quick and easy to build.  We filled with Mineral Oil, Bifen and Perm-X 31-66 at the same ratios we fog with.  We've only got 6 acres in pens at the moment, have dozens of fly traps and fog our pens every time we go around them as well as a perimeter a minimum 200 yds from the pens and still had flys on our deer's backs until we put them up.  Our oldest doe walked right under the one between the doe pens within minutes.  The gap between buck pens is 9' so I didn't bother hanging it up as Bell suggested and lowering it down but if you can it is a good idea.  We let does into the alley to walk past and the bucks followed them right under it the first day but after we closed their gates back the yearling bucks avoided it for a few days.

I tried these last year and didn't work for me. I used the 1/4" grass type rope with diesel mixed with permethrin. They would be empty in no time and all the diesel on the ground. I am thinking of redoing my ropes with cotton and try mixing my diesel with hydraulic oil or mineral oil to thicken it up so it last longer.

It had gotten to be a pain and expensive

Cotton ropes work well. Crimp hog rings on the bottom end of each rope and leave about 3" of rope below the rings to fray. This will brush the repellent softly over antlers. The extra weight is also needed to keep them hanging straight & tight. If they are made and designed correctly the repellent mix won't need to be refilled very often. I bought the ones sold in Alabama and then made a couple more. I've used them since 08. I would recommend buying one from those guys that sell them from down there and copy it. I think they had worked the kinks out of getting it to work right for a few years already before I bought ours.

Truth, any way you can get a few pics of the finished product?

I'll try to remember to take some when I get back home in a couple weeks.

I'm guessing it is going to be expensive and there is a lot of waste but I when I left last week I couldn't find a fly on my bucks.  I've only got 3 bucks and I'm away 200+ days a year.  A Powerball Breeder, Turning Point son and a Blackjack son which I figure I've got at least $2000 tied up in the cheapest one not including the cost of their mothers so far.  I may be wrong but if I save one buck I've saved more than I think I will spend that much on chemicals.

I just put this one up in a doe pen.

Billy, I have seen these things in action at Gale Thomas place. I can tell you from my experience his deer for the most part don't appear to be bothered by insects much at all. I suggest them to people that have fly problems.

In the process of making the wicks.  We mixed a batch of repellant that is all natural ingredients. Was reading some other forums that had all natural supplements.  I will administer this to one of the wicks, I have set up, in the morning before we go to church.  Will be interesting to see when we get back home. Here is what I have so far.

1 gallons lite mineral oil

4 cups of pure lemon juice

2 oz eucalyptus oil

2 oz citronella oil

2 tbl spoons Dawn dishwashing detergent

2 tbl spoons minced garlic.

The oils can be found at most health food stores but they are expensive.  If this works I will order them online. It will be a lot cheaper.

I hung a few of the wicks up dry just to let them get use to them before I added ingredients. Was going good deer was use to them and tugging on the strings.

Well we all know what happened as soon as I tried the one. They avoided it like the plague.

I have blocked every access they have from going around. They are laying far away. This mix does have quite an odor they need to get use to. They will eventually go through it because it hangs in front of the opening to the feed barn.

Will keep you posted.

Lol. Figures. They r smart buggers. Like u said, they will get used to it! Thanks for the update!
