An update on the buck that cut his leg. He is just being a deer. He walks on it now, but bone is still showing. It is slowly closing up. Still dont have answers on what was best to do.

Looks like he's getting better! It's amazing sometimes how fragile deer can be, but also how resilient they can be. Keep us posted.

Thats great...But thats what I don't get about deer something your sure is not going to turn out good... goes fine, than you loose one to something stupid???

Thanks for sharing.

Here is an update on our cut leg buck. He is doing fine, and barely limps anymore. There is a spot about the size of a quarter left to close up. He has not had any fly problems, and is doing fine.

The one thing that I was concerned about with this is the fact that the bone is actually exposed. I was afraid that the bone would actually dry out and become brittle in the exposed area.

So far I am wrong, and I am glad.

CONGRATULATIONS !! Thats one for our side !!

I have watched him stand up and box the other yearlings, and run and play. I too was concerned with the strength of his bone, but so far he has done fine. He is a pretty well bred buck, as you can tell with what he put on even after the injury. He is a Snoopy grandson, and out of a PJ doe.

Amazing Reed! Right after you posted about this buck, I had a doe do the same thing and looked terrible. I probably would have panicked if not for this thread, but she seems to fine after a few months of healing. So thanks for posting this.

Well, those that get the "Deertracking" mag. may have noticed that they published a story on our cut leg buck. An update on him.......His wound in completly closed now. He has scar tissue over it, but it is closed. He can run and play with very little notice of limp. We ran him through the chute this week were I could get a good look at it. I t looked fine and had good blood flow all around it.

And.....He had 10 points and scored 105"@1 despite all of what happened to him.

Hey Jay!

Glad to hear that the wound has closed up and the buck is doing fine. That is why we published this article. To show that there are some positive health stories out there- that don't lead to "death on the deer farm" and to help others with your experience.

We had a similar situation. The buck fawn we had, also had an exposed bone. It was a full year later (wound was closed) and we suddenly noticed that where he had been wounded, there was a piece of bone sticking out and he was limping slightly again. We got hold of it and pulled it the rest of the way out and it was a 2 inch piece that must have been the exposed dry shell of bone.

He did great after that. If anyone read about our deer experience with CWD, he was put down at 4 yrs old with the rest of the herd (based on government policy). There was a picture of him ("Reuben") owned by our son Dale in the Winter 07/08 issue (pg 48). If you look close you can see the leg injury (a year after the injuury- at 1 yr). He beat the leg injury and we are convinced would have lived to a ripe old age!
