Rope Wick Applicators

Hunters Dream927561401588933

In the process of making the wicks.  We mixed a batch of repellant that is all natural ingredients. Was reading some other forums that had all natural supplements.  I will administer this to one of the wicks, I have set up, in the morning before we go to church.  Will be interesting to see when we get back home. Here is what I have so far.

1 gallons lite mineral oil

4 cups of pure lemon juice

2 oz eucalyptus oil

2 oz citronella oil

2 tbl spoons Dawn dishwashing detergent

2 tbl spoons minced garlic.

The oils can be found at most health food stores but they are expensive.  If this works I will order them online. It will be a lot cheaper.

Jeff, how is this working out?

It seems to have reduced the fly count but they are still noticeable. Bad thing seems the neighbors cattle like to lay 50 yds from my fence. 30 head of cattle carries a lot of flies.

The wicks are not doing what we expected. The deer do smell good. LOL.

Well in my God given Hillbilly Redneck mind came up with and started my own ideas on a misting system. Works pretty good so far. Have the other enclosures to expand on.

These pieces and parts I located from different vendors based on cost. Right now I have enough to make 700 ft of misting line with a mister every 20 ft for around 400.00

Start off with the pressure come from a cheap electric pressure washer. Harbor Freight.

The storage tank came from a facility that sells used food grade barrels. I got 1/2" bulkhead fitting TSC and inserted that in the bottom of barrel.

Plumbed the tank to the pressure washer. Bulk head close nipple 1/2 PVC valve close nipple to small screen filter TSC plastic barbed fitting 1/2" thread 5/8" hose garden hose to plastic barb fitting 5/8" hose to 1/2" male thread into a 1/2" female thread to male garden hose fitting. Screw that into pressure washer. You will have to buy the fitting to convert from pressure washer hose to 3/8" female thread. which inserted another shut off vavle from that I ran 1/2 PVC SCH 40 outside then transitioned to 3/8"

The tip and assembly this takes a little work. I used 3/8" HDPE barb fitting tee that has 1/2" male thread on the port side of the tee. US Plastics on-line. A 1/2" PVC threaded cap Lowes. The plastic orange sprayer tips without brass. TSC. The rubber o-rings that seal these tips TSC.

The PVC cap I had to cut 1/4" off the threads won't seat right if you don't. I chucked them up on my wood lathe and cut it pretty easy. Then drilled 1/2" hole in the center of the cap. Placed tip in the cap then put in the o-ring then tighten that up on the barb fitting.

The support lines I used 3/8"x100ft air lines Harbor Freight 19.99 per 100 ft. Cut them into 20 ft lengths and cut inserted a misting tip. I ordered some HDPE barbed tees as well from US Plastics. Used these to cut the line and run a leg off the main line. I also put near the end of the first leg a 1/2" supply valve same as to turn off your sink or commode. When charging the line open the valve and the water will fill the line faster. When water comes out shut off valve. This valve screwed on the barbed tee fitting. Directly on the end of the line I put in an eye bolt. The threads of the bolt needs wrapped with thread tape then tighten a hose clamp to seal. I used eyebolt to mount to post. Will add photos later.

Well today the system is fully operational. 30 tips 600+ ft of line.

Ive been using one since I started. Trial and error on the diameter of rope. Finally took the cotton batting out of them and they seem to not drain as quickly. Started out using diesel fuel and permethrin. Then switched to permectrin II. The tail waving and ear flopping did seem to slow down but not stop. I fogged with those chemicals as well with a ULV fogger. This year, I went with Pyranha. Bought it from Valley Vet supply. It contains a PBO. That is a must ingredient to have in insect repellant. It is a knock down agent. Permethrin will repel the flies to some extent but will not kill them like Pyranha. I add it to my diesel fuel in my rope wick and I also fog with it once every two days at dusk. It has a 48 hour residual effect. I fog the inside of my feeding barn and the perimeter of the pens. Since I started in April, my tail waiving and ear flopping has stopped and I don't have any flies in by barn. My deer are much happier and so am I.
