Any thoughts on todays stocker sale?

We couldn't make the sale Tyler, but from what I heard the stocker prices were very strong!!!

I was there. Prices were good. The crowd was good and most sellers seemed happy.

What were some of the prices to size ratio?

i was there...prices were really good and fair. It amazed me though one guy bought half the deer (and i'm being modest in saying that) and basically set the shooter prices.

I'm kinda pissed i sold my shooters 2 weeks ago but live and learn. No more deer of mine will be sold til after the auction


 


Todd, I have all the prices per size avg'd out. I'm a big numbers guy so have the biggest class $$$ jumps in there as well.


 


200 and 250 class were cream of the crop as far as money gain from the previous class.


 


I didn't get ALL prices but prolly 90% of them

I have said it for years!!!! There are 3 main buyers at these stocker sales. Are there only 3 preserves in the country. So we let 3 guys set the standards for prices.

Coby...it would appear that way to me. I hear what you're saying BUT unless we farmers as a whole stand together under ONE price list they will set prices..and there's no way in hell we will all be on the same price list.. WAY too any reasons to from us to sell cheaper

here's what i have guys. this is avg of all the deer. I also have a sheet where i took out the high/low price but that only made a sizable difference on 2 classes. as stated above the biggest jump in $$$ is from 190 to 200 and from 240 to 250 class. I dont think id call those prices (strong). The prices for those smaller bucks isnt to bad but on the larger deer id say those prices suck

I'd say there are too many big deer these days driving the prices down. Remember too this is an AVG i posted. Prices varied a BUNCH according to look... one 300 class went for 11,000 while another REAL BAD LOOKING 300 went for 4900

when a preserve is getting 20k for a 300+ hunt and they are giving less than 8k the producer is the loser. 


I know what my feed bill is a month, medication cost, animal loss, etc. 


However I do think that better framed animals should bring more than those that are trashy.  I think the day of paying solely by the "inch" is over. I looked over what was in the presale catalog and I really didn't see a lot that "I" would buy, but I'm pretty darn picky.  The premium animal should bring half the price of the hunt. Is it right to sell a hunt by the inch and not pay the producer by the inch, regardless of looks????? or are hunters being charged less for lesser looking bucks????

the $ a farmer gets may not be as much as he'd like  but that's business. when the buyer knows a farmer has to dump these deer he has the upper hand. but that's business.  makes no difference what he charges for the deer that's his business. as a producer if you produce more than you can hold over til next year you get what the market will bear. if each state had a co-op and market their deer through it the prices would be stronger. but what happens is you have the producers that have to get these deer moved to pay bills and will sell for less. you either stand together as one solid force or get picked apart by the buyers

There is an element of the deer business that revolves around the idea "get smart people on your side then trick the dummy". Some preserves use this money making but unethical business philosophy just like those who unrealistically hype and manipulate their breeding stock prices. There seems to always be another vulnerable newbie.

I've been in business for 37 years  and just because things don't go your way is not someone else fault. perhaps they were a better business person. sometimes we have to look in the mirror. perhaps a newbie here but not to sound business practices. also a breeder can inflate their breeding stock prices but you don't have to buy.

Black bayou, Seems like farmers here in my state/area love to get picked apart by the buyers.... Sellers here act like 13 year old ***** when a buyer comes into town... all googly eyed and out of breathe like at a Justin Beber concert...LMAO

i'll tell you all my take as being  a new deer farmer. Take it for what it's worth BUT it is what it is. I have lost a breeder to ehd a shooter to ehd, a shooter to foot rot, bucks crashing fences, does crashing fences, fawns dying, dogs....coyotes etc. As a new farm EVERYTHING comes out of our pocket on the farm. Thank God i have a partner and we can share the expenses of money we don't really have. The way i look at it right now is "sell it while you can" One never knows what the next day will bring. I'm not afraid to say we have sold 9 deer this yr for about 6k ... and while that is prolly WAY low for 3 2yr old shooters and our 2nd best yearling buck and 5 does... it's what we needed to do


So yeah..my take on it I GOT FEED MONEY FOR THE YR..BARELY..but i got it


 


I commend all of you that have the option to "wait" on better prices. Hopefully i'll be there one day. For now i'll sell for whatever i NEED to sell them for to get the farm self sufficient

Well although i agree with ya to a point i believe you are hurting the industry more than helping and a change here or there you would not have to sell so cheap and get walked on.Which you would reward from in the end. By no means would i ever tell anybody how to run their business, just as i probably would not listen to someone myself. With you being new just as we all were there are many that would give you some ideas. But you are right, at the end of the day a guy has to do what he has to do but you do not need to let those buyers laugh all the way to the bank on your dollar.

there is no right way or wrong way  what works for one may not work for the next guy and there are times you do what you have to do  there is no guarantee in any of this  if there were  we'd all have 200" yearlings but that is not the case . in the end if we can produce a quality product hopefully we will get rewarded. but  and there is always a but  don't be upset if you don't get what you were expecting  the market can only bere so much   also supply and demand  is what fuels a market
