HELP! my 3 month old fawn is losing all his hair & winter is coming. I found him 3 months ago caught in a barbed wire fence, almost dead at about 4 days old.  This is my first care of  a fawn & so am not experienced at this at all.  I am wondering if the hair loss is due to something I am feeding him: or not feeding him: or maybe it is a bacterial or fungal problem. Hi skin is not sore or scabby nor do I see any insects unless they need to be under a microscope to see them. (He does have a few small black ticks though--any help on how to get rid of them would be helpful too.)

He has been bottle fed on raw goats milk since I got him until now.  At about 3 weeks old, I brought him outside to live in a 40x40 foot pen (partially sunny area) where he was trying to eat the wire fence & the wood posts.  For this cribbing, I gave him 2 teaspoons a day TOTAL of Redmond's natural trace minerals salt with selenium 90 (ground up in a coffee grinder & put in his bottles throughout the day since I couldn't get him to eat any feed for the first 2 months to put the supplement in.) He is no longer cribbing.

For the first 2 months, he just lived on goats milk & just a few lilac leaves a day from my lilac bush because that is all the leaves there is since I live in a pine forest. About 1 month ago, I got the bright idea to put some molasses mixed into his feed & so due to this, for the last month, he is finally eating some feed.  I feed him daily a mixture of 3 cups Three Way corn, oats & barley; 1 cup Manna Pro Calf Manna (thanks to the advice of you guys) with about 1 tablespoon molasses mixed into it.

I have tried to give him alfalfa hay for the last month & he won't eat it.  Just a nibble or two out of my hand & the rest lays on the ground (I have tried not feeding him his milk or his Three Way feed/Calf Manna mix, hoping to get him hungry enough to eat the alfalfa hay, with no avail.) He won't eat alfalfa pellets either.

COULD THE HAIR LOSS BE DUE TO:

1.. My putting too much minerals a day in his bottles

2.  Not enough minerals in his bottles

3.  Not getting enough leaves

4.  Not getting any alfalfa hay

5.  A fungal or bacterial problem

6.  OR some other reason??

Any feeding ideas to supplement him is welcomed along with any medication ideas or advice you might have. He has become a part of the family & I really love him.  The nearest vet is about 5 hours away as I live out in the middle of nowhere, so appreciate any help you can give.  Thank you so much.

It looks like he's just loosing his summer coat, the short gray hair underneath is his winter coat. Hopefully that's all it is. I know my bottle fawns are shedding like crazy right now too. He will eat his alfalfa when his system is ready for it. Feed him leaves if you can. If he's eating your mix, stick to it. It's that time of the year. Most of the adults have completely shed and have just the gray winter coat now.

Yeah, one of my does looks sort of like that right now, winter coat coming in. To get rid of the ticks you could get some top spot flea/tick treatment for dogs and apply it, if you know his approximate weight. Or get some ADAM"S flea/tick mist (dogs/cats) at Wal-Mart, pet section and spray/rub him down with it. That should take care of bugs. Could you plant some greens for the boy, in his pen or do you have honeysuckle growing in the woods? My deer love honeysuckle and I could find it in the woods even in snow. Have you tried apples, pears etc. ? Just some thoughts....

I use frontline for dogs on my deer that I can touch. Get the one for his approx. weight. I agree with the above. Getting rid of summer coat and winter coat is coming in.

Hi Everyone,

I just thank you so much for all your help. I am just so new to all this and I appreciate so much all your expertise, kindness, generosity and all your time when I know you must be so busy with your own lives.  You are just a great bunch filled with integrity and I am so glad I found you!  Thank you, thank you so very much.  I wish you all a great day filled with sunshine, abundance and all good things.  Best always, Dianne

Dear Jadaho,

Thank you so much for the apple/pear idea.  I have been trying them for the last 3 days and my fawn is just devouring them, especially the apple when I bring one to him sliced thin like leaves.  He pushes my hand out of the way and sticks his nose in the bag gobbling them up.  It is just a feast for him; he is so hungry.  I really appreciate your help because he has found something he likes to eat. Thanks for the tick info too.  You guys are the best!

You are very welcome, glad that something works. Being new to deer farming, I had struggles too figuring out what to do and how to not mess up. Thanks to this wonderful deer community here I feel I learned a lot and it gives me some peace of mind that there are very experienced folks that won't hesitate to give advice now and in the future. Thanks to all you "oldtimers"!!!. And by the way, I took the bread as treats advice from a post on here and my deer love it too. Might want to try that, just plain Jane white bread, but don't overdo it, he does need complete diet and needs to adjust slowly. May God bless your efforts.
