HELP! my 3 month old fawn is losing all his hair & winter is coming. I found him 3 months ago caught in a barbed wire fence, almost dead at about 4 days old. This is my first care of a fawn & so am not experienced at this at all. I am wondering if the hair loss is due to something I am feeding him: or not feeding him: or maybe it is a bacterial or fungal problem. Hi skin is not sore or scabby nor do I see any insects unless they need to be under a microscope to see them. (He does have a few small black ticks though--any help on how to get rid of them would be helpful too.)
He has been bottle fed on raw goats milk since I got him until now. At about 3 weeks old, I brought him outside to live in a 40x40 foot pen (partially sunny area) where he was trying to eat the wire fence & the wood posts. For this cribbing, I gave him 2 teaspoons a day TOTAL of Redmond's natural trace minerals salt with selenium 90 (ground up in a coffee grinder & put in his bottles throughout the day since I couldn't get him to eat any feed for the first 2 months to put the supplement in.) He is no longer cribbing.
For the first 2 months, he just lived on goats milk & just a few lilac leaves a day from my lilac bush because that is all the leaves there is since I live in a pine forest. About 1 month ago, I got the bright idea to put some molasses mixed into his feed & so due to this, for the last month, he is finally eating some feed. I feed him daily a mixture of 3 cups Three Way corn, oats & barley; 1 cup Manna Pro Calf Manna (thanks to the advice of you guys) with about 1 tablespoon molasses mixed into it.
I have tried to give him alfalfa hay for the last month & he won't eat it. Just a nibble or two out of my hand & the rest lays on the ground (I have tried not feeding him his milk or his Three Way feed/Calf Manna mix, hoping to get him hungry enough to eat the alfalfa hay, with no avail.) He won't eat alfalfa pellets either.
COULD THE HAIR LOSS BE DUE TO:
1.. My putting too much minerals a day in his bottles
2. Not enough minerals in his bottles
3. Not getting enough leaves
4. Not getting any alfalfa hay
5. A fungal or bacterial problem
6. OR some other reason??
Any feeding ideas to supplement him is welcomed along with any medication ideas or advice you might have. He has become a part of the family & I really love him. The nearest vet is about 5 hours away as I live out in the middle of nowhere, so appreciate any help you can give. Thank you so much.
