My name is Emily, 32, live in rural southeastern Colorado, and I am ready to get out of the field of education. It is ran by fools. I have wanted to start a deer farm for almost a decade, after my husband took me shed hunting down on the river bottom. I would like to meet people who are knowledgeable either from successes or failure. Also, my husband and I would like to come visit some other deer farms in the USA and by next year I would like to have land ready and purchased some bred does (if that is at all where I should begin???).
I just don't know where to begin. I have spent all of today, researching cost/profit/maintenance/laws/regulations/deer life timeline/etc.
I just don't see how it can be, unless I'm missing something: sheds (in 3-5 years) and bred does and breeding bucks. But only if they have good genes. Those two profitable parts of deer farming do not amount to much, when to run a successful deer farm you need to spend $$$ for upkeep, feed, vet calls, etc. I have to be missing something.
