Advice on eyes

This fawn was born today around 1:00 pm . His eyes are buged out an the pupils are at the bottom.He has had BO-SE, C&D antitoxin , and Vitiman B complex. Appears to be blind. Has had colostrum from mother and supplement from bottle. I need some advice he is big and healthy except for this eye problem. If it can't be fixed I will do what is best for him. I have no idea how the animal would learn to cope being blind, but it would not be the first blind deer I have heard of. I and Laurie can't recall who it was that had one, but there was someone we visited that had a blind deer. Apparently blind from birth.

As I say no idea how the bugger would learn to cope that way. I guess a special pen setup might be in order.
 
I tried to raise a blind one 2 years ago.....I finally ended up putting her down at the vet after 2 months. She did have other issues though. It was extremely hard on me to do that, but I knew I did the right thing....I cried all the way home.

Allen, I believe when we raise white deer we can have a genetic problem with eyes. There would be no reason genetically not to put this deer down. If the problem was genetically caused it should never be used for breeding. It would learn to cope but would have the same problems as any other deer when scared and would hit the fence at full stride with the bad results. I kept a blind deer one time and that is what happened to it so I did it no favors keeping it alive.
 
I was thinking how to word close to what he said.

I would not use him to breed and I would watch using the buck and or doe that made him. Did you happen to breed a pied or a white to a pied or white?

Thank-God... I have never had problems...I am trying to breed pied and whites with strong genetics and bloodlines, "as I am sure you are also"... One with problems should be humanely culled.
 
I would give 2cc of 7% iodine orally then get straight B1 (Thiamine 500mg/ml) from Jeffers or a vet and give 5cc's as a IM injection for 5 days. If the eyes do not clear up following the treatment, then I would recommend putting the deer down. I hope you have good luck!
 
My wife works in the eye dept. at "a large medical center" and by looking at the pictures, she thinks glaucoma and congenital cataract. Can you tell if it can see at all? Does it react to light? It is hard to give up on those little guys.
 
Hey guys thanks for the responces. His mother is pied and his father is brown. Neither have white genes that I know of, and there is no relation between the parents. Scott I have the 7% Iodine but will get the B1 from vet tomorrow. Ikoff my wife just fed him 3oz. colostrum supplement as I was reading the responces. She says he responded to flash light by blinking and turning his head. Thanks so much, and if there is any more sugestions, please post. We arent giving up yet if nothing else we will learn from it. Ike both eyes look pretty much the same, but one is puffier than the other. Allen
 
If you have a tractor supply near you they have oral b complex the deer love the flavor or you can get sublingual b vitamins in your stores for people I have used both with great succes in bottle raising Fallows.Or you can get injectionsI can't tell from the pictures but they look in medical terms "messed up" not cloudy.I wish you the best of luck... It is never easy when life rests on you.
 
Thanks Billie jo, I just talked to the vet, I am meeting him in the morning for the different meds that have been suggested. Here are some more pictures from different angles. He doesent like the camera flashes close up. Allen

I would try getting him used to a caller and tie him on a dog run this would keep him out of trouble. I now aguy that raised a deer from the wild wasn't blind but he kept it on a chain like this and it did just fine acted like a goat he moved it all around called him his brush hog.
 
In those pictures it looks like pressure behind the eye or and the eye looks red and irritated not deformed...Can you tell is the eye whole?
 
If the flash bothers him, he is seeing something. Could it be an injury after he was born? It looks like the right eye is swollen and irritated, otherwise he looks really healthy. I would think that when the vet looks at him he would be able to give you some oppinion as to what it might be.
 
I believe the eyes to be whole. As for pressure I think that is correct also. The eyes seem more bulged now than they did at birth. Allen
 
Hey put salt in his eyes it will bring the sight back if he his any at all don't wait do it now the longer you wait before you do it the less sight he will have do it morning and evening for three days.
