AI vs. natural service

newbie to the business, just looking down the road and wondering if AI vs. natural breeding is fesible for me.

how many females do i need for it to be worthwhile for a AI tech to come and breed? Or is this something i'll need to do own my own? i am located in north central KS.

If you have a few... like 5 does, some people transfer them to there buddys facility so they can all get ai'd together . Some a.i techs want big numbers ... Some don't. I guess your gonna have to check with them .

You can get a much better variety of genetics in your herd quickly with AI. The cost of buying even one breeder buck can be prohibitive for a newcomer. Eventually you will have your own breeders as a result of your AI program.

AI is the best method to improve the overall quality of your herd with some of the best sires in the industry. It is also the cheapest way of doing it.

The AI process is not brain surgery and can be done by most deer breeders. Go to some AI classes to learn the basics. Get help from deer farmers in your area. Most AI guys will come to your place if it fits in their schedule. The problem is the AI guys schedule as most deer have a time which is best for your area to get bred. That is why many deer farmers have learned how to do this AI process themselves. If your interested in doing this AI process yourself I can supply you with a list of what is needed from suppliers I personally have used and feel have the best products for us.

It is pretty easy to learn.I did 2 of mine this year and i think i went 2 for 2.I put them in with the buck on nov 24th and i have never seen him ever pay any intrest to them.Both does i did had fawns last year.I bought my ai kit from grizzly whitetails and that kit has everything you will ever need.This was my first time doing this and when the very first straw exploded when it hit the water,I was kinda taken back by that but now after doing it once it will be much better this year.

we do it both ways and syncronize them for both types of breeding. If you can get on an A/I techs route thru your area they are usally willing to stop and help fill in the trip.

I did the A.I.on my doe's this year on my own, it is easy to do. You can get some real good semen now at a fair price if you watch the auction's on WTE and other auction's. I think I had good result's but wont know for sure untill the fawns are born. I did learn that the yearling's that have never had a fawn are a bit tougher to do, but your older doe's are no problem at all. I think for a new farm like you and my self will have to use A.I. It cost the same to feed a good deer as it will to feed junk that we cant sell.
