Does anyone here ai without access to a handling facility? What i mean, is it possible to breed cervically without a chute? The problem that i am running into is i bought my animals from a breeder and they pick them up to breed in the fall. The only semen that i can get is from bucks that they own semen rights to. I was looking to diversify but am unable because they want to make their money. Right now i just dont have the funds to build a facility of my own. Any suggestions?

3 years running i have bred without anything but a dart gun. Thank the good lord i am still at 100% with my ai program. Calm animals or knowing how to trick them to get darts in their butts is the secret. Yes you sure can do it!!

Well, let me ask you this. Do you lap ai or go through cervix? Either way, what do you use to hold them into place? Do you use a cradle, gurney or just lay them on the ground. Evidently since you have such a high percentage, darting them multiple times for cidrs and breeding isnt a problem.

I have a vet that works out of his trailer and lap ai.. You can get semen from all over

I would never want to try and lap one of my does. I set everything up in one of the shelters in my doe pen and bring the does under cover to breed them. I have a homemade gurney that i use to carry them in, Lay them up on a piece of plywood leaned up on a bale of hay, Have a little stool behind them and go to work! I use the kiss system, Keep It Simple Stupid.. I only have to dart one most times. I can walk up and syringe most of them!

I have animals that i must dart. They are all 20 footers. Thats why i plan to bottle feed this year. This is my second year in deer farming. I ony have one pen and am in the process of building another. It just seems like alot of darting: inserting cidrs, pulling cidrs, them breeding. Seems like that would put alot of stress on them. What do you mean bring them under cover? Sorry for the ignorance........

I just meant that i bring them inside the shelter, That way they are under cover if weather is bad and also its total darkness except for my ai light. It would be alot of darting with alot of deer but really no big deal if you set yur area up right. I am putting up a chute system this summer just in case i ever need it but it will be a very small, simple system! You can breed your deer. Its a very easy thing to do!

I have to dart three time's, I get a couple people to help and we bring them inside a building get them up on a table and do the ai there most time's. This year I was short on help so did every one out in the pen on the ground. To be honest you dont need any fancy handeling system to do your ai. I dont have a chute but even if I did I would still sedate to do the ai, chute would be nice for cidr's in and out as well am many other thing's but when you dont have it you have to make do with what you do have.

We have done both Lap and cervical AI for years without a building with great success. This year we built a facility at our new place. It worked great and is easier than darting all of them 3 times, but you can certainly do it without a building.

Maybe I read your post wrong, but it sounds like you must have a contract with whoever you bought your deer from that they do the breeding and get some of the offspring, is this correct?

No. Im just new to the game. I own all my deer. I was just led to believe that their way was the only way to go. They have good genetics but they also only have a hand full of deer to chose from.

Ok, sorry. Yes you can A.I. using a dart gun. We did it last year. We built a stand to put them in to do the breeding, worked great.

Does someone have a cut and dry step by step process for timing the cycle? From inserting the cidr and all of the meds at that time to pulling the cidrs and anything that goes with it at that time. Then breed on the 56th hour? What meds do you give during breeding? As yall can see, im new and want to do ai next year along with my vet. But i trust yall's information more than any vet. Thanks for all of your replies. Also does anyone know if there is an ai seminar coming up next year? God bless

While im on the subject, is an animal that is lap ai'd more expensive than a cervically ai'd animal. I was told that they were but could not find the reasoning behind it.

It is all easy for any farmer to do. I put cidr's in and leave them for 14 day's you can go 12-15 or some may go longer but I try for 14, if I am going to give any shot's that is when I do it. You will pull your cidr's and give the pmsg shot 56-60 hour's before the time you plan to do your ai. I try to do my ai at 57-57 1/2 hour's. I will dart my doe's around the 56 1/2 hour mark that way my first dor is on the table and ready by hour 57 if all goes well. Have everything ready well before you start.

It would be worth your time to find a farm that you can visit and see it done.

I have. Been through two ai sessions with the same farm cause thats where my deer were. Just wanted to see how everyone else does their's. If there is one thing that i have learned from deer farming it's that everyone does thing a little differently.
